An Overview

The Nutrition Supervisor performs advanced professional and administrative work in the planning, implementation, and oversight of nutrition programs within the Division of Aging and Adult Services. This includes the administration of congregate meals, home-delivered meals, nutrition education, monetary assistance programs, and other food and nutrition services designed to improve and maintain the nutritional health of older adults and adults with disabilities. The incumbent conducts nutrition program planning, management, development, and evaluation, and provides professional nutrition consultation and education to individuals and community groups. The Nutrition Supervisor collaborates with internal stakeholders, community partners, and contracted providers to ensure coordinated, high-quality service delivery. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Deputy Division Chief/Long Term Care Coordinator for the Division.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have thorough knowledge of foods and nutrition theory and practice; thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations as they pertain to nutrition programs for the elderly; good knowledge of the techniques of public health education; good knowledge of the current social, cultural, and economic problems pertaining to public health; good knowledge of current scientific developments in the field of public health nutrition; skill in the presentation of nutritional information and data to clients, groups and organizations of diverse backgrounds; ability to gain and retain the confidence and cooperation of the clients; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

The Opportunity

  • Plans, develops, and oversees all nutrition programs within the Division, including congregate meals, home-delivered meals, nutrition education initiatives, and specialized nutrition support services.
  • Monitors program performance and compliance, ensuring all services meet federal, state, and local regulations, as well as internal quality standards.
  • Conducts regular program evaluations, analyzes data, and implements improvements to enhance service effectiveness, nutritional outcomes, and participant satisfaction.
  • Provides professional nutrition consultation to older adults, adults with disabilities, caregivers, and community groups, including individualized guidance and group education.
  • Coordinates with contracted meal providers to ensure meals meet nutritional guidelines, cultural preferences, and dietary needs while maintaining quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Supervises, trains, and supports staff, volunteers, and interns involved in nutrition and meal service programs.
  • Develops and updates nutrition policies, procedures, and standards, ensuring alignment with best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees fiscal and administrative functions of nutrition programs, including budgeting, invoice review, procurement processes, and monitoring use of grant and program funds.
  • Collaborates with internal teams, such as case management, transportation, and social services, to ensure coordinated service delivery for program participants.
  • Builds and maintains community partnerships with senior centers, nonprofits, healthcare agencies, and food providers to strengthen and expand nutrition services.
  • Ensures participant eligibility determination and documentation for nutrition and monetary assistance programs, following established guidelines.
  • Responds to participant issues or concerns, investigates service challenges, and ensures timely resolution.
  • Leads outreach efforts to promote nutrition programs, recruit participants, and educate the community about available services.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, and program documentation for internal leadership, funders, and regulatory entities.
  • Stays current with emerging nutrition research, aging services best practices, and policy changes to guide program enhancements.

About The Department

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance abuse disorders.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree in therapeutic nutrition, dietetics, or a related field; three years of experience as a nutritionist who has worked with senior adults; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Possess a valid driver’s license; Meets current minimum academic requirements (Didactic Program in Dietetics) as approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Completed a supervised practice program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Completion of the Registration Examination for Dietitians; requirements; at least one (1) year of experience with PeerPlace; at least one (1) year of experience with service standards from the Division of Aging and Rehabilitation (DARS)

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to: Criminal Records Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; education/certifications.

Schedule

Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8am – 4:30pm
