Job Summary: Operates and maintains a Wastewater Treatment Plant and related equipment and chemicals. Complies with local, state, and federal permit requirements. Performs grounds and building maintenance and clerical duties as needed.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Schedule: This position works Monday- Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Participates in the department afterhours, weekend and holiday on-call rotation schedule. Also works weekends as necessary for plant coverage.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Major Duties:
· Performs daily rounds at the plant by visually checking equipment, chemical levels, logging readings and orders, logging visual checks, changing filters, monitor digester and clarifier levels periodically, logs findings, and makes purchasing and process control recommendations.
· Performs equipment maintenance as required by Operations Task List.
· Performs process controls by collecting various samples from different locations in the process, testing plant processes and making physical changes to the plant equipment to obtain maximum efficiency. Evaluates systems and processes, and makes recommendations for improvements.
· Maintains daily records and prepares periodic reports relating to influent and effluent volume, re-circulation, temperature of sludge, etc., for future reference and to meet Federal and state requirements.
· Keeps plant equipment clean and in excellent operating condition; makes routine and general repairs or adjustments to equipment or circuits; performs all necessary work to keep structures, equipment, buildings and grounds neat and clean in appearance.
· Services, repairs and replaces various electrical and mechanical equipment used in the disposal plant; troubleshoots for cause of breakdown and initiates’ repair.
· May be called upon to assist other departments.

Minimum Qualifications:
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
· Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License (CDL preferred)
· 2 years’ experience in wastewater operations.
· Must be capable in the operation and maintenance of a dump truck, tractor, bobcat, and other light construction equipment such as jack hammer, compactor, saw cutter, etc.
· Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
· Ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
· Ability to perform physical labor.
· Position is subject to call-in and overtime work; possible shift rotation during emergency conditions.
· Must be able to come to work promptly and regularly.
· Must be able to work well with others and take directions from assigned supervisors.
· Must be able to perform work accurately, safely, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
· Georgia Wastewater Class 3 Operator’s License required (or must be able to obtain within one year and three months of the start date).
· NPDES Blue Card (within one year of employment)
Knowledge Required by the Position:
· Considerable knowledge of the general operation of a wastewater treatment plant, working knowledge of the construction and operation of various disposal plant equipment; working knowledge of the lubrication and repair of engines, pumps, motors and other machinery and of the basic principles of mechanical operations.
· Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems and initiate or coordinate repairs; ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions pertaining to disposal plant operations; ability to establish working relationships with other employees and the public.
Supervisor Control: The Wastewater Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions with many aspects of the work being covered specifically. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and completed work for compliance with instructions, accuracy and the nature and propriety of final results.
Guidelines: Guidelines used are the instructions provided to the employee by the supervisor. These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation. These guidelines include written and oral instructions, as well as departmental policies and procedures. Guidelines also include Georgia traffic laws, safety and departmental rules and regulations.
Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to supervise the operation of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant and to analyze water samples to test for purity and portability.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are typically with coworkers and workers in other support units.
Purpose of Contact: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
Physical Demands: The position typically requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching and intermittently sitting. Physical demands also include climbing ladders, and using tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
Work Environment: Work is performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to cold and heat or inclement weather, as well as noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery and its moving parts. This work requires the use of protective devices such as mask, goggles, gloves, etc. Work results in occasional exposure to contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals.
