What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Manager position at City Lit Books?
City Lit Books in Chicago, IL is looking for one general manager to join our team. Located on 2523 N. Kedzie Blvd., we are a cozy, independent bookstore that values staff and community engagement.
Our ideal candidate is self-driven, enthusiastic, and reliable with preferred retail experience and book industry knowledge. We are looking for someone who is passionate about indie bookstores, people, and fun! A sense of humor is a must.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily business operations, including staff scheduling, training and task delegation
- Keep current on trends in publishing and new releases
- Manage store inventory, including ordering (in collaboration with owner) & receiving; work with publishers and distributors to recover credit for damages and shortages
- Facilitate and track special orders
- Maintain excellent customer service standards, provide book and purchase recommendations to customers and and act as mentor for staff
- Coordinate store events, including book clubs, author appearances, and storytimes. Work with owner on publicity, social media, and website updates.
- Manage profit and loss figures
Qualifications
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills to effectively connect with customers, coworkers and owner
- Positive attitude, ethics, and integrity
- Ability to manage a fast-paced, high-volume, clean, customer-focused workplace
- Strong time-management and team-building skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and organize
