The Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM), Storm Water Quality Division, is hiring a Planner I at Hale O Honouliuli, in Kapolei. This position supports the Planning and Monitoring Branch by assisting with research, planning, field inspections, and implementation of the City’s storm water (NPDES/MS4) regulatory program under supervision.
What You Will Do:
- Support watershed and storm water planning programs by conducting research, field inspections, and assisting in identifying pollutant sources and solutions.
- Assist with water quality modeling and data analysis to estimate pollutant loads and prioritize improvement projects using tools like SWMM and HSPF.
- Contribute to regulatory compliance efforts (TMDL, MS4, trash reduction) by helping evaluate programs, coordinate with agencies, and track required actions.
- Perform field-based water quality monitoring and inspections, including sampling, site assessments, and identifying illicit discharges or BMP issues.
- Provide technical and administrative support through data management, reporting, stakeholder coordination, and participation in outreach and training activities.
- Must be able to work in outdoor and potentially hazardous conditions, including exposure to traffic, uneven terrain, confined drainage structures, and construction sites.
- Must be able to perform physically demanding activities, including walking on rough surfaces, climbing into streams and drainage systems, and lifting/carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to handle and work around chemicals, reagents, and environmental sampling materials using proper safety procedures.
- Must be available to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, for field investigations, sampling, and emergency response activities.
