The City is hiring fleet mechanics at various levels to work on repairing and maintaining

the City's fleet of automotive and heavy vehicles and equipment.

The following are general descriptions of the different Fleet Mechanic levels within the City and County of Honolulu. Current vacancies are with the Department of Facility Maintenance, Automotive Equipment Service Division.

Fleet Mechanic I (BC-08): $5,471/month. This is an entry-level opportunity for individuals pursuing a career in the repair and maintenance of automotive and/or heavy vehicles and equipment and/or construction equipment. Therefore, persons selected for positions in this class must meet the minimum qualification requirements and be capable of successfully attaining the skills and qualifications required to satisfactorily progress to the journey level.

Fleet Mechanic II (BC-10): $6,079/month. This level independently repairs and overhauls a variety of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel vehicles and equipment that are part of the City’s fleet that includes but are not limited to the following: light vehicles and equipment (i.e., cars, light to medium trucks, etc.), construction equipment (i.e., front end loaders, paving machines, etc.), and heavy vehicles and equipment (i.e., refuse trucks, dump trucks, etc.); and performs other related duties as required.

Fleet Mechanic III (BC-11): $6,300/month. This level independently repairs, maintains and overhauls a variety of heavy motorized vehicles and/or equipment in the City's fleet (such as refuse trucks, dump trucks, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, etc.), as a substantially full-time assignment; and performs other duties as required.

Special Work Conditions: Depending on the department and position, you may be required to work on weekends and holidays and may be subject to rotating and/or night shift work.

If you qualify for the position, your name will be placed on an eligible list for the respective Fleet Mechanic level for further consideration. This list may be used to fill current and future vacancies in any City department with vacancies with these job titles.

Experience Requirement

Fleet Mechanic I: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the skills and duties of this position. Typically, this type of experience and/or training is obtained through completion of a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program.

Such experience and/or training must have demonstrated knowledge of the basic components of automotive, diesel and/or heavy equipment technology; basic mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory; basic analysis and modern diagnostic techniques; routine mechanical repairs and adjustments.

Education/Training Credits

Education/formal training in an automotive or diesel mechanics program may be credited toward your application if you provide documentation of your certificate(s)/degree. Some examples include the following:

  • An Associate's degree in Applied Science (AAS) in Diesel Mechanics Technology may be used to qualify for the Fleet Mechanic I level.
  • Certificate of Achievement in Automotive Technology or Diesel Mechanics may be given some credit along with relevant work experience.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificates may be given some credit along with relevant work experience under a journey level mechanic.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Verification Requirement: You must submit evidence of your education/formal training in order to be given credit. Please attach an electronic copy of your diploma, official transcript which shows the embossed seal, applicable FCE, or certificate(s) to your application. Copies will not be returned. All information on your documentation must be legible and complete in order to be given credit.

Fleet Mechanic II: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of this position.

Experience must have included maintenance and overhauls of a variety of light and heavy motorized vehicles and/or equipment in the City’s fleet, of which you assisted in more difficult and complex tasks and received supplemental training to increase knowledge related to the industry.

Fleet Mechanic III: Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey level skills and duties of a Fleet Mechanic III.

Experience must have included the repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems on a variety of heavy vehicles, such as dump trucks, truck tractors, and/or refuse trucks.

In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications, your application will be further evaluated. Your score and eligibility for the Fleet Mechanic I, II and III levels will be based on the quality and quantity of your education/training, experience and/or other related job requirements and competencies applicable to the position. Failure to provide sufficient information may result in your application being rejected or your receiving a lower score.
