Kickstart your career in building inspection! The Department of Planning and Permitting, Building Division is hiring a Building Inspector Aid. In this role, you will assist experienced inspectors in reviewing buildings and structures for compliance with Building, Housing, and Zoning Codes. You’ll help inspect construction work against approved plans, investigate basic complaints and code violations, and gain hands-on experience learning City codes and ordinances. This position also involves traveling to inspection sites and supporting the team in ensuring safe and compliant structures across the community.
What You Will Do:
- Assist higher-level inspectors in investigating and inspecting buildings and structures for fire, health, and safety hazards, structural issues, inadequate exits, maintenance problems, or compliance with the Building Code during occupancy changes.
- Compute and approve room capacities for assembly areas based on occupancy requirements.
- Inspect care facilities, schools, and other buildings for code compliance.
- Draft inspection reports and letters using computer systems.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
- Operates a vehicle to and from inspection sites.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
TWO (2) years of experience in inspecting or supervising building construction, preparing and/or reading and applying building plans and specifications, or interpreting and/or applying the Building Code and related ordinances.
Substitution: An Associate degree in architectural or engineering drafting OR a Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for the required experience.
Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided.
