Position Information

Powering Safe Buildings for our Ohana

The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP), Building Division, Electrical Code Branch is seeking a registered professional Electrical Engineer to review complex and major building electrical projects. In this role, you will ensure electrical plans comply with the National Electric Code and applicable regulations. You will also evaluate new or alternate materials and devices for safety and suitability in buildings and structures.

What You Will Do

  • Review and approve electrical plans, specifications, and calculations for major buildings and structures
  • Work with architects, engineers, and the public to ensure electrical designs meet code and answers questions about design
  • Coordinate with electrical inspectors to ensure field installations match approved plans and code requirements
  • Explain electrical engineering decisions in writing and recommend updates to the electrical code as needed

What You Will Do

  • Prepares electrical designs and plans for compliance with the electrical code and departmental standards as it relates to the City’s energy conservation program
  • Responsible for electrical energy conservation measures and renewable energy components of the program, including implementation of conservation initiatives
  • Prepares departmental electrical standards
  • Coordinates all electrical plans and specifications with emphasis on energy savings, power and lighting systems for existing and new public building facilities in the areas of design, installation, maintenance, and operation

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in an engineering specialty.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:

One year of registered professional electrical engineering experience.

Desirable Electrical Engineering Experience

  • Experience reviewing or designing electrical systems for buildings or building infrastructure
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and electrical plan review processes

APPLICABLE SKILLS NEEDED

  • Applying electrical engineering principles and practices to building projects
  • Evaluating and reviewing electrical system designs
  • Interpreting and applying the National Electrical Code
  • Reviewing electrical plans and specifications for buildings and structures
  • Analyzing electrical designs and checking calculations
  • Preparing engineering reports and written correspondence
  • Communicating effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public

LICENSE REQUIREMENT :

  • Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license, as required.
  • Possession of a valid license as a professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Hawaii .

NOTE: Applicants with a current out-of-state license in Electrical Engineering must obtain their Hawaii license prior to appointment.
