Position Information
The Department of Transportation Services, Transportation Engineering Division, is hiring for a Traffic Technician III in Honolulu. This position supports transportation and traffic studies by collecting, compiling, and analyzing data, reviewing simple plans and designs for compliance with standards, and assisting with more complex projects that improve roadway safety and efficiency. The position is a temporary (limited-term) position with the possibility of extension.
What You Will Do:
- Collect traffic data in the field, including vehicle counts, pedestrian activity, speed studies, and other traffic-related information
- Install, operate, adjust, and maintain traffic counting equipment and related tools
- Assist in reviewing plans and designs for subdivisions and public street improvements for compliance with standards
- Compile and analyze traffic data; prepare maps, charts, graphs, and tables
- Assist with transportation and traffic studies, including investigations of traffic conditions and complaints
- Prepare simple reports and recommendations based on findings
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned for the position.
- Fieldwork requires working near moving vehicles and construction sites.
- May involve exposure to outdoor elements and vehicular traffic hazards during data collection and inspections.
- Must be available for occasional evening, weekend, or emergency work as a Disaster Response Worker

Minimum Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience, which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job, may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three years of survey and/or data collection, tabulation, and analysis work experience. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic research, survey methods, and statistical procedures.
Desirable Experience:
Computer experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and/or AutoCAD software.
Substitution: A Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited four-year university or college may be substituted for ALL of the required experience.
