Position Information
Are you a professional musician ready to be part of a band with a royal historical legacy dating back to 1836? The Royal Hawaiian Band is seeking an experienced flutist to perform on the flute and related instruments as part of a world-renowned ensemble. This role goes beyond performance as you will help set the musical standard within the flute section while contributing to a dynamic and diverse repertoire. In addition to performing Hawaiian music, the Band performs marches, orchestral transcriptions, pop arrangements, Broadway selections, and movie soundtracks. Be ready to perform regularly at iconic venues such as the Iolani Palace and the Kapiolani Park Bandstand, as well as festivals and events throughout the year.
AS PART OF THEIR SELECTION CRITERIA, THE ROYAL HAWAIIAN BAND WILL CONDUCT LIVE BLIND PERFORMANCE AUDITIONS AND ORAL SELECTION INTERVIEWS. CANDIDATES ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN TRAVEL EXPENSES (ARRANGING THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION AND LODGING ACCOMMODATIONS).
What You'll Do
- Perform on flute and its double in rehearsals and live performances, including lead parts and solo features
- Lead and support the flute section, including coordinating section rehearsals
- Guide fellow flutists on performance quality, including timing, tone, and overall sound
- Assign and organize musical parts within the section
- Collaborate with other sections to ensure a cohesive group performance
- Participate in occasional vocal performances when required
Special Working Requirements
- Work irregular hours, weekends, and holidays
- Travel to neighboring islands and abroad on concert tours
- Transport instruments and equipment to and from equipment trucks to rehearsal and performance sites

Participate in approximately 30 parades annually
- The longest parade is approximately 5 miles in length
- Perform outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun, wind, and rain

Minimum Qualification Requirements
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in music which demonstrates the ability to competently play the assigned instrument at the sixth level of difficulty.
Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and ability to play the assigned instrument at the sixth level of difficulty normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in music which demonstrates the ability to competently play the assigned instrument at the sixth level of difficulty.
Education must have been completed by the time of application in order to be credited. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
- Evidence of the ability to competently play the flute at the sixth level of difficulty; and
- Ability to competently perform the required duties and responsibilities of the position.
APPLICABLE SKILLS NEEDED
- Advanced proficiency in playing the flute, including strong tone, rhythm, and intonation
- Solid understanding of music fundamentals and performance techniques
- Familiarity with musical compositions and repertoire for assigned instrument
- Strong sight-reading skills and ability to quickly learn and memorize music
- Skilled in musical interpretation and expressive performance
- Ability to perform effectively within an ensemble setting
- Proficiency in specialized techniques relevant to assigned musical roles
