Hiring one full-time Lead Parks Technician assigned to the Horticulture team.

Seeking a highly skilled Lead Parks Technician to join the Horticulture team, performing advanced technical and supervisory work supporting the maintenance and development of the City and County’s developed and undeveloped park areas. This role leads complex horticultural operations requiring specialized knowledge and strong problem-solving skills, including overseeing maintenance crews, diagnosing and treating turf and plant diseases, performing planting, pruning, aeration, and weed mitigation, and ensuring the safe operation and upkeep of equipment and tools. The position also supports efficient use of resources and responds to customer needs with professionalism to ensure continued park accessibility and safety.

Work /life balance

Schedule: Monday - Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm with on-call responsibilities.

This position assists with Snow Control Operations that is compensated through on-call pay, regular pay, and/or overtime pay.

  • Performs maintenance on flower beds, shrub beds and turf areas including diagnosing and treating disease and pests, aeration, weed mitigation, planting and pruning shrubs and perennials, and planting annual beds.
  • Expert in understanding and responding to customer needs
  • Expert Ability to analyze and solve technical problems pertaining to respective specialty area within the Park Division
  • Expert in the routine operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and tools used in assigned maintenance operations
  • Assists in the operation of snow plows during inclement weather, and is available for snow control duties after hours and on weekends.
  • Supervises and assists in the operation of an assigned maintenance unit.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual and semi-annual budget requests.
  • Assists in the effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.

Education

  • High school graduation or GED - required
  • Degree or coursework in Horticulture or related field - preferred
  • Currently holds a license in pesticide application from the Department of Agriculture, preferably a QS

Experience

  • 3 years experience in parks maintenance - required
  • 1 year experience in the supervision of full time and seasonal employees - required
  • Experience managing volunteer groups - preferred

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (in Addition To Above Requirements)

New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, and background checks, which may include local police check and sex-offender registry.

If this position is required to drive a CCOB vehicle a DMV check will be required.

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record for continued employment.

  • Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects)
  • Duties require a full range of physical motion and activities including manual labor
  • Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend and holiday work required
  • Required On-Call responsibilities
  • Required to work special events on holidays, weekends, and outside normally scheduled working hours
  • Regular contact is made with employees in other departments and the public
