What are the responsibilities and job description for the R&D Prototyping Engineer position at Citra Space Corporation?
In this role, you will support a broad range of engineering activities essential to our space domain awareness mission. This position requires a “jack of all trades” with a strong foundation in physics or engineering principles and practical skills spanning mechanical and electrical assembly, fabrication, programming, and 3D modeling. This is a hands-on role. You will also be a key contributor in operating and maintaining light manufacturing equipment (CNC mills/routers, laser cutters, and 3D printers) to build ruggedized enclosures, RF antennas, and mobile field kits. The successful candidate will collaborate across teams to execute tasks that range from hands-on fixture assembly to software scripting projects, contributing directly to the design, build, and deployment of advanced space object identification technologies in a fast-paced startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Support mechanical and electrical assembly tasks including fixture and prototype fabrication
- Operate, maintain, and improve light manufacturing equipment including CNC mills/routers, laser cutters/engravers, and 3D printers for small‑batch production and prototyping
- Assist with field deployment and maintenance of telescopes, antennas, and related instrumentation
- Develop and maintain 3D models and fabrication drawings for machined, laser‑cut, and printed parts using modern CAD tools
- Write and debug Python scripts or other programming languages for automation, data processing, and basic test/fixture control
- Create and execute basic CAM workflows (toolpath generation, post‑processing, and job setup) for CNC machining and PCB/antenna milling
- Collaborate with engineers on diverse projects, adapting to daily shifting priorities and technical challenges
- Participate in testing, troubleshooting, and documentation of hardware and software systems
- Support shop setup, tool selection, and maintenance of parts and supplies
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related STEM discipline
- Experience: 4–7 years of professional experience in a technical or engineering support role (prototype lab, R&D shop, light manufacturing, or similar)
- Strong hands-on skills in mechanical assembly, light fabrication, and electrical systems
- Proficiency with 3D modeling software and experience with 3D printing technology
- Some programming skills, preferably in Python but experience with other languages is a plus
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
- Excellent problem-solving skills and adaptability to changing project requirements
- Familiarity with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, signal generators, VNAs) and RF testing procedures is a plus
