Cimarron is seeking an Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) Operator Assistant to support our partnership with Firefly Aerospace at their rocket production facility in the Briggs, TX area (Bertram mailing address). In this role, you will work alongside the AFP Machine Operator, providing hands-on support during machine setup, operation, bagging, installation, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of the Automated Fiber Placement system.
Through this partnership, Cimarron supplies skilled technical talent in support of Firefly Aerospace’s advanced launch and space systems. Firefly designs and builds small- to medium-lift launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles for government and commercial missions from low Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond. Together, our teams leverage advanced carbon composite structures, patented propulsion technologies, and common components across platforms to move fast, improve reliability, and deliver payloads at a lower cost.
Key Duties:
- Support the AFP Machine Operator by independently assisting with the preparation and setup of the Automated Fiber Placement Machine for production runs, including material handling, spool loading, alignment, and tensioning of composite materials.
- Manage the organization, preparation, and loading of composite materials, ensuring readiness and proper condition throughout the manufacturing process.
- Actively support AFP production operations by adjusting tooling, monitoring material feeds, performing debulk and final bagging, placing cores, and helping ensure continuous and efficient machine operation.
- Partner with the AFP Machine Operator to perform visual inspections of composite parts, identifying defects or irregularities and assisting with corrective actions.
- Assist with routine and preventive maintenance activities, including cleaning, lubrication, and first-level troubleshooting of AFP equipment.
- Track composite material inventory and proactively communicate replenishment needs to minimize production interruptions.
- Maintain accurate production documentation, including material usage, process parameters, and production records in accordance with quality requirements.
- Strictly adhere to all safety policies and procedures, contributing to a safe and compliant manufacturing environment.
Required Skills, Experience, and Education:
- Due to facility security requirements, only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for consideration at this time.
- 3 or more years of experience in aerospace composites manufacturing or a related advanced manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify defects, process deviations, and potential equipment issues.
- Experience handling composite materials and supporting automated or CNC-based manufacturing processes.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform moderate lifting associated with composite material handling.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to follow instructions and report issues clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based manufacturing environment.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced production setting.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and workmanship.
Desired Skills, Experience, and Education:
- Experience supporting Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) or similar automated composite layup systems.
- Prior experience in the aerospace industry.
- Mechanical aptitude to support first-level machine maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with manufacturing safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Experience operating CNC or automated manufacturing equipment.
