Church of Messiah Sexton Job Description
Flexible Part-Time (20hrs per week, preferably Monday, Wednesday and Saturday)
The Sexton is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, security, and physical upkeep of the church buildings and grounds. This part-time role requires a dependable, knowledgeable individual who takes pride in supporting worship, community programs, and special events.
Primary Responsibilities:
Ensuring cleanliness in both the church and the parish hall, including deep clean when necessary.
Setting up and breaking down furniture and items for worship services, weddings, funerals, memorial services, meetings, and community events.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Working closely with staff to ensure spaces are efficiently prepared and/or repaired for activities and events that are scheduled.
Identifying issues requiring professional contractors, overseeing larger contractor projects, and minor repairs such as changing lightbulbs.
Shoveling and salting walkways, debris removal and general upkeep.
Tracking and ordering cleaning supplies and maintenance materials.
Qualifications
- Experience in custodial work or building maintenance with general knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems is highly valued.
- Comfort making independent decisions.
- Physical stamina: the ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs, climb ladders, bend and reach.
- Reliability, discretion, and a respectful understanding of the church environment.
