What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Tech Apprentice / OR / Full-time position at CHRISTUS Health and Careers?
POSITION SUMMARY: The Surgical Technician Apprentice is member of the surgical technician training program and works under the supervision of the Surgical Technician Educator. This year long training program will teach the apprentice to provide support for surgeons throughout the operation by preparing, providing and caring for instruments and equipment and maintaining a sterile field.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a school of Surgical Technology preferred.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: BLS certification required within 6 months of starting the training program
SKILLS:
- Knowledge of care and handling of instruments and equipment
- Knowledge of sterilization and cleansing procedures
- Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally in English.
EXPERIENCE: One year experience in an acute care hospital setting in the operating room or an instrument care environment preferred.
NATURE OF SUPERVISION:
- Responsible to: Clinical Manager, Operating Room and Director, Surgical Services and Supervised by The Surgical Technician Educator.
ENVIRONMENT:

Employee will be instructed in Universal Precautions and Right to Know. Employee will be expected to utilize all protective equipment available whenever there is a potential for exposure to infectious materials or hazardous chemicals. Cleaning, repair and replacement of this protective equipment will be furnished by the hospital. Utilizes available tools to prevent worker injuries.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy physical effort requiring standing, walking or lifting most of the day. Requires ability to speak, hear and communicate verbal and written materials.
