Overview and Responsibilities

This Journeyman Electrician position supports multi-campus locations and is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and operating a wide range of building electrical and electronic systems, including lighting controls, fire alarms, emergency power, security systems, and electrical distribution. The role includes working with electrical system modifications, performing troubleshooting, interpreting technical drawings, and ensuring compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and state/local codes as well as coordinate with contractors and energy‑efficiency programs, and support general facility maintenance needs. This role practices strong technical expertise, safe work practices, effective communication, and the ability to work in diverse environments and conditions.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Repair, install, maintain, and operate building electrical/electronic systems and program equipment:  lighting controls, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, security systems, building automation systems, electrical distribution systems, elevators, etc.
  • Assists in executing campus renovation or expansion projects.
  • Plans limited electrical system additions or modifications.
  • Read, employ, and update electrical panel schedules.
  • Perform general maintenance work as assigned by Facilities Administration team.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with local contractors and facility related trades.
  • Coordinate, interpret, and identify Focus on Energy procedures and incentives.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must maintain current knowledge of the National Electric Code and state/local requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of 110/220V and 277/480V 3-phase power systems and associated power systems.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills: must be able to find the root cause of electrical issues and think logically when diagnosing problems and developing solutions.
  • Ability to follow and enforce safety procedures mandated by electrical code and College/department safety regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret building drawings and schematic diagrams.
  • Ability to operate locator equipment to identify underground cables and utilities.
  • Possess excellent project management, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Advanced skill in operation and maintenance of tools and equipment related to facility maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of commercial/industrial maintenance functions in the areas of electrical, carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, and general.
  • Ability to interpret and update Arc Flash standards.
  • Ability to work overhead, safely and accurately while operating scissor, fork, and aerial lifts, as well as ladders.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds a minimum distance of 45 feet.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices.
  • Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by speaking and writing clearly, concisely, and professionally; practicing active listening; reading critically and adapting communication for audience.
  • Ability to recognize personal biases, adapt to different cultural situations, and demonstrate a commitment to respectful interactions with persons of various ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, or educational backgrounds.
  • Basic knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Office 365 Suite.
  • Ability to be available for holiday, evening, weekend, and an on-call rotation.   

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Wisconsin Journeyman Electrician license required.
  • Three to five years experience in industrial, commercial, or educational facilities required.
  • Journeyman certification and continuing education as required by state licensing board.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record, including meeting all requirements as indicated by CVTC’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to obtain a CVTC Forklift and Scissor Lift Certification within six months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain OSHA 30 Certification within 1 year of hire
