Experienced HVAC Mechanic (Including Chiller Systems)

Position Summary

The Experienced HVAC Mechanic will handle the installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, and residential HVAC systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled chiller systems. This role requires frequent regional travel and expertise with manual tools as well as advanced computerized diagnostic systems. The mechanic will ensure systems operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all applicable regulations while maintaining professional customer interactions.

Responsibilities

• Install HVAC systems across industrial, commercial, and residential settings
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs to optimize HVAC and chiller system performance
• Inspect, maintain, and repair air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated controls
• Conduct system start-ups, shutdowns, and seasonal commissioning of chiller systems
• Perform tube cleaning, refrigerant charging, oil analysis, and leak detection on chiller equipment
• Troubleshoot complex HVAC and chiller system issues using advanced diagnostic tools and control systems
• Test and calibrate thermostats, sensors, flow controls, and building automation interfaces
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and piping diagrams specific to chilled water systems
• Ensure proper operation of cooling towers, pumps, and chilled water loops (if applicable)
• Maintain compliance with all safety standards, including lockout/tagout and refrigerant handling regulations
• Accurately document work performed, system conditions, and service recommendations
• Communicate clearly with customers regarding system performance, issues, and repair solutions

Required Qualifications

• Technical certification in HVAC or related field (Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing)
• Hands-on experience with chiller systems (air-cooled and/or water-cooled)
• Strong knowledge of refrigeration cycles and large-tonnage equipment
• Ability to safely handle refrigerants and perform system evacuations and charging

Preferred Qualifications

• 5 years of experience in HVAC mechanics, including commercial/industrial systems
• EPA Section 608 Certification
• Experience with centrifugal, screw, and scroll chillers
• Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and controls integration
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, motors, and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and control wiring diagrams
• Proven troubleshooting skills with complex HVAC and chiller systems
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Thorough understanding of safety standards and compliance requirements

Additional Preferred Skills

• Experience with cooling tower water treatment and chemical monitoring
• Knowledge of energy efficiency practices and system optimization
• Experience performing load calculations and system balancing
