General Purpose of Job

The Peer Support Specialist is an individual with a personal history of drug addiction and/or alcoholism who is now in long term (2 years) recovery from all substances. Peer Support Specialists work with families at various points throughout their case within the child welfare system to support them in their successful completion of case plans as a result of substance use issues. Responsibilities include engaging parents in discussions about community recovery resources in a non-judgmental and supportive manner, participate in meetings as requested to provide input, and potentially provide mentorship to youth whose lives have been affected by substance use.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meet with families at the time of Reunification to provide information on community recovery resources
  • Provide documentation and feedback to child welfare case manager.
  • Conduct home visits when requested by child welfare case manager to ensure engagement and progress of identified families.
  • Recognizes crisis situations and takes appropriate action.  Follows policies, procedures and protocols when an unusual or crisis situation occurs. 
  • Adherence of all data collection into FSFN.
  • Produce periodic reports as requested.
  • Other duties may be assigned as special projects may be requested

Working Hours

CNSWFL’s work week typically operates during regular business hours Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. However, there may be occasions when the job requires availability outside of these hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to provide 24/7 coverage as needed. Flexibility in scheduling and availability to work on a rotating shift basis are not likely but may be required. Candidates should be prepared for potential variations in working hours and be willing to adjust their schedule as necessary to meet the demands of the role. Your supervisor will advise you of your work hours..

Travel

Travel in and outside of Circuit 20 (Lee, Charlotte, Collier and Hendry/Glades counties) is required.

Training

All non-certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists must attend formal instruction (Peer Recovery Support Training and Wrap-Around training). Upon successful completion of training, the candidate will enter provisional status.  The candidate will be required to become fully certified per requirements of the Florida Certification Board. All Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialists Professionals must complete ten (10) hours of relevant in-service training on an annual basis. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities

Education and Experience

A High School Diploma and a minimum of two (2) years of peer recovery experience as an Adult in recovery. Must have a working knowledge of community services in our local five (5) county area.  Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships is also a must.

Skills and Abilities

Must be able to operate standard modern office machinery, including fax, telephone, calculator, computer, scanner, printer, and copier.  Must be competent with Microsoft Office Suite programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.  Must be competent with basic e-mail protocol and procedures including sending, receiving, replying, attachments, and meeting scheduling; excellent written and oral communication skill.  Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality.

Certificates, License, Registrations, backgrounds, drug screens, Etc.

  • Valid driver’s license required, with proof of insurance
  • Driver’s license check is a requirement
  • Criminal background screening (fingerprinting) (Local Law Enforcement and FBI/FDLE)
  • Drug Screening is a requirement
  • Children’s Network participates in E-Verify

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulatory documents, contracts, policies and case records.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from management, staff, clients, and outside agencies.  Ability to effectively present information to children and families, management, employees, and outside agencies.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Able to anticipate needs and/or problems based on current events and/or situations and to develop solutions.

This job requires the ability to sit for extended periods; walk; stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel or crouch; talk and hear.  This job requires visual acuity sufficient to read and to operate standard modern office machines.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

This is administrative work in an indoor office environment with a moderate noise level (business machines, printers, computers, telephones).
