What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator III position at Chief of Staff KC?
ABOUT THE COMPANY
We are placing this role on behalf of a well-established industrial construction firm with a strong Kansas City presence and a national footprint. With more than a century of operating history and nearly 9x revenue growth over the past five years, this organization builds and maintains some of the most complex industrial facilities in the country - including power generation, advanced manufacturing, and emerging market projects. The Kansas City office delivers a full range of construction, maintenance, and electrical services and operates with an entrepreneurial, team-first culture.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive bids for complex industrial construction projects. A key distinction of this role: project drawings at bid are typically 10–15% complete, meaning the Estimator must think and work like an engineer — solving forward, not just pricing what's on paper. This position works closely with project managers, engineers, and field operations and has a direct path to growth within the estimating function.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Independently prepare comprehensive cost estimates including material take-offs, labor, equipment, subcontractor bids, and all project-related expenses
• Lead the full bid preparation process — from initial scope review through final proposal and supporting documentation
• Ensure all estimates align with project specifications and client requirements
• Conduct detailed cost analysis and identify opportunities for savings without compromising quality or scope
• Lead value engineering efforts throughout the project lifecycle
• Build and manage relationships with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing
• Negotiate and manage supplier and subcontractor contracts
• Partner with project managers, engineers, and field teams to gather project information and align estimating with execution
• Provide mentorship and training to junior estimators
• Maintain organized records of all estimates, bids, and project documentation
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
• 5–8 years of progressive experience in industrial construction estimating
• Field experience strongly preferred — candidates who understand how pipe gets routed and how electrical is run have a distinct advantage
• Proven track record estimating complex, large-scale projects from early-stage drawings
• Proficiency in estimating software required; experience with ProCore, Hard Dollar, Accubid, and/or Bluebeam is a plus
• Strong command of Excel
• Solid understanding of construction methods, materials, and industry standards
• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred
• Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or equivalent certification is a plus
WHY THIS ROLE
• Competitive base salary starting, commensurate with experience, plus bonus eligibility (potential relocation stipend for the right candidate)
• Clear growth trajectory with the ability to create your own career path across disciplines
• Entrepreneurial environment where ownership and accountability are genuinely valued
• 90% employee satisfaction across all levels of the organization
