The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Human Services Assistant (HSA) for the Permanency Team to assist Family Services Staff who provide foster care and adoption services in Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights.
What You Do And How You Do It
You will assist the Permanency Team in administrative and supportive capacities through various tasks. These requirements are not limited to but include monitoring and completing compliance tasks for Title IV-E and non-IV-E cases; monitoring and completing funding for foster care expenditures; monitoring and maintaining records of compliance from external service providers, collaborating with divisions within the agency to ensure compliance. You will also complete, organize and file paperwork; enter information into computer systems.
You will provide transportation for adults and children in a county vehicle, supervise visitations between parents and children, administer drug screenings, assist with home visits and team coverage as needed.
Perform Other Work As Required.

We'll be honest. At times you will feel overwhelmed and emotionally drained. The workload is heavy with new cases constantly forming. This position requires critical thinking skills, exceptional planning and organization skills and attention to detail given the program mandates that must be adhered to. It's a stressful job with critical outcomes. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline.
This position is part of an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required.

Here's What You Need:
- High school diploma supplemented with post-secondary coursework in subjects such as social work, human services, gerontology, or one of the social or behavioral sciences, business or related field, and relevant work experience in public administrative support work OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Skill in operating a variety of automated office equipment to include calculator, fax/copier; and the use of computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and file maintenance programs.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents such as State and local policies and procedure manuals.
- Associate’s degree in human services field preferred.
- Knowledge in child welfare policies and procedures preferred.
- Excellent organizational, time management, oral/written communication, interpersonal, public relations and supervisory skills.
- Knowledge and ability to apply social work principles and Virginia policies in family services programs.
- Ability to demonstrate exceptional critical thinking and decision-making skills during crisis situations.
- Proficiency in various computer programs like OASIS and Safe Measures.
- Ability to maintain confidential records and materials.
- Exceptional ability to collaborate and achieve performance goals.
