Minimum Qualifications

If so, the Chesterfield County Planning Department has an exciting opportunity for you! Chesterfield County, a fast-growing community located 20 minutes south of Richmond, VA, is seeking to welcome a highly motivated Manager for our Geospatial Services team of the Planning Department.
This position oversees countywide GIS processes relative to land development and is a contributing member to the Planning Department’s leadership team. The position is responsible for the overall management of advanced professional and technical work reviewing GIS projects of broad scope and complexity for a team of 4 professional GIS analysts. The position provides recommendations to the Assistant Director, Planning Director, and IST relative to improvements to GIS and processes. This position requires excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and analytical skills. The ideal candidate should enjoy working to improve processes, use GIS in innovative ways to help the county, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and enjoy working collaboratively with other staff and County residents.
The Geospatial Services Manager reports to the Assistant Director and supervises 4 staff.
Examples Of Work
Bachelor's degree in GIS, Planning, Computer Science, or a related field (master's degree preferred); five years of work experience in GIS or related field with a strong working knowledge of the disciplines of platting, addressing, deed research, planning, or computer science; one to three years of supervisory/management experience (three years supervisory experience in planning is preferred); or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Extensive knowledge of land use development related review processes and management of same. Extensive knowledge of local level planning programs, policies, and procedures, and analyses. Knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to establish good working relationships with elected and appointed officials, developers, employees, and general public. Experience with local government GIS is preferred.
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

- Provide leadership, strategic direction, and direct supervision to a team of 4 staff on the Geospatial Services team
- Foster department and cross-departmental solutions to development processes, plat digitization and addressing projects
- Maintain and oversee the work program for Geospatial Services team
- Identify, develop, and implement process improvements relative to the review and digitization of development plats
- Attend and/or facilitate various team, divisional, other meetings as needed
- Provides customer service for internal and external customers on GIS matters
- Assist other departments with GIS needs
- Conducts planning research, analyses, and conflict resolution on projects having a high degree of complexity and public interest
- Recommend GIS improvements to increase efficiency and communication; performs other work as required.
