What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Technician position at Chesterfield County?
High school diploma or GED; four years of related environmental maintenance or lawn care experience; one year of experience with environmental programs and projects in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

In this role, your primary focus will be maintaining medians and other landscaped spaces throughout the county. You’ll assist with lawn care and landscaping tasks, including operating mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, and other equipment to keep these high-visibility areas looking their best. In addition to landscaping and median maintenance, you’ll support our team by removing litter from county roads, main intersections, bus stops and areas needing extra attention. You will also help with cleaning up illegal dump sites, participate in community clean-ups, educational outreach, and promote various volunteer programs for the Community Enhancement Department. This job is active and hands-on. You should be able to lift 50 or more pounds, walk on uneven ground, bend and stoop, lift items overhead, and load/unload materials from a truck. Some tasks involve repetitive motion and working in adverse weather conditions. Night and weekend hours may occasionally be required, with comp time provided. Perform other work as required.
