Science Teacher-Middle School

Position Summary

The Science Teacher provides high-quality, standards-aligned instruction to middle school students through engaging, inquiry-based, and technology-rich science learning experiences. The teacher develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of all learners. At CMIT-South Middle School, the Science Teacher supports the school’s STEM-focused mission by creating a classroom environment that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, scientific inquiry, and innovation. The teacher monitors and evaluates student performance, uses data to improve instruction, maintains required records, communicates with families, and contributes to a safe, inclusive, and achievement-oriented school culture.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Science Teacher will:

1. Plan and deliver engaging science lessons aligned to Maryland science standards, curriculum frameworks, school goals, and the School Improvement Plan.

2. Create a student-centered classroom environment that supports inquiry, experimentation, collaboration, and academic risk-taking.

3. Use a variety of instructional strategies, including laboratory investigations, demonstrations, modeling, project-based learning, engineering design challenges, group discussions, multimedia tools, and hands-on STEM activities.

4. Integrate technology meaningfully into instruction, including digital simulations, data collection tools, learning management systems, research tools, and other instructional platforms.

5. Establish clear learning objectives based on curriculum expectations, student needs, assessment data, and knowledge of adolescent development.

6. Prepare, administer, and analyze formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction.

7. Use data to identify student strengths, gaps, and trends; develop intervention and enrichment plans; and support continuous academic growth.

8. Provide differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with IEPs, 504 plans, English learners, advanced learners, and students requiring additional academic support.

9. Maintain a classroom environment that is safe, orderly, respectful, inclusive, and conducive to effective science learning.

10. Teach and reinforce appropriate laboratory safety procedures and ensure the safe use of science equipment, materials, technology, and facilities.

11. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by school expectations, Board policy, administrative regulation, and applicable law.

12. Communicate regularly with students, families, administrators, counselors, and colleagues regarding student progress, academic concerns, behavior, and support needs.

13. Participate in parent-teacher conferences, student support meetings, grade-level meetings, department meetings, professional learning communities, and faculty meetings.

14. Collaborate with science, STEM, special education, ESOL, and grade-level colleagues to plan instruction, analyze data, align assessments, and support student achievement.

15. Promote equity and cultural responsiveness by incorporating multiple perspectives, relevant examples, and inclusive instructional practices into science instruction.

16. Support schoolwide STEM initiatives, science fairs, academic competitions, enrichment opportunities, clubs, field experiences, and other activities that advance CMIT-South’s mission.

17. Continually improve professional knowledge in science education, instructional technology, assessment, classroom management, culturally responsive teaching, and adolescent learning.

18. Monitor the appropriate use and care of science equipment, textbooks, instructional materials, technology, and classroom facilities.

19. Support students with academic, behavioral, organizational, and adjustment concerns by providing guidance, encouragement, and appropriate referrals.

20. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree in science education, biology, chemistry, physics, earth/space science, environmental science, STEM education, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university is required.
• Prior teaching experience at the middle school level is preferred but not required.

Certification:

The candidate must hold or be eligible for appropriate Maryland State Department of Education certification in the assigned science content area or grade level.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Science Teacher may provide direction to classroom paraprofessionals, dedicated aides, student teachers, volunteers, or other support staff assigned to the classroom, as applicable.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, and use hands to handle instructional materials, tools, technology, and science equipment. The employee may occasionally reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, or move materials up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities may include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Working Environment:

The Science Teacher works primarily in a classroom and/or laboratory setting. The work environment includes regular interaction with students, staff, families, and administrators. The position may involve the use of science materials, classroom technology, laboratory equipment, and standard instructional resources. The teacher is expected to follow all safety procedures and maintain a learning environment that supports student well-being and academic success.
