Job Purpose:
- The Director of Nursing (DON) is a registered nurse (RN) responsible for the overall clinical operations of the facility. This includes directing and supervising nursing staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing budgets, and fostering a positive and efficient work environment that prioritizes patient care. The DON plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of care and upholding the facility's commitment to quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies, procedures, and protocols that align with current best practices, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
- Manage and supervise nursing staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels to meet patient needs and maintain appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios.
- Develop and manage the nursing department's budget, monitoring expenses and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Collaborate with other department heads to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
- Monitor patient care quality and implement quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
- Maintain accurate and complete medical records and documentation in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and accreditation standards.
- Investigate and resolve patient complaints and incidents, taking appropriate corrective actions.
- Promote a positive and supportive work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, and professional development among nursing staff.
- Stay current with advancements in nursing practices, technologies, and regulations through continuing education and professional development activities.
- Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes related to nursing and patient care.
- Act as a liaison between nursing staff, physicians, other healthcare professionals, patients, and their families.
- Oversee medication management practices, ensuring safe and accurate administration of medications.
- Participate in the development and implementation of infection control policies and procedures.
- Conduct regular rounds to assess patient care, staff performance, and overall unit operations.
- Provide direct patient care as needed, particularly in emergency situations.

 

Qualifications:

Required Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of operation

Required Experience:
- Minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership experience, preferably in a behavioral health or substance abuse treatment setting.
- Demonstrated experience in managing and developing nursing staff.
- Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CARF).
- Proven ability to develop and implement policies and procedures related to nursing care.
- Experience with budget management and resource allocation.
