SUPERVISOR: Director of Special Education

SUMMARY: Assist Special Education Department Directors with all aspects of supporting Mild/Moderate staff and students, including planning, implementation, coaching, and training. Provide support in recruiting and retaining Mild/Moderate staff. Monitor the effectiveness of program practices and support professional development and provide student support in schools at the request of teams and Directors. Also conduct professional evaluations of students at the request of SPED Directors and complete all aspects of a research based and reliable evaluation, and provide defensible evaluations following best practices in the field of Special Education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following tasks describe the basic functions of the job and represent the type of work performed. They do not constitute an exhaustive list of the duties and responsibilities performed on the job. The following frequencies and percentage of time spent are approximations only.

  • Support and provide resources for effective instructional practices and develop professional development trainings and opportunities for Mild/Moderate staff members, aligning the Mild/Moderate instructional practices with the District’s strategic plan, goals, and initiatives. [Daily, 15%]
  • Support district and school teams with academic evaluations, writing reports, analysis and interpretation of evaluation results, and participating in evaluation, child study, and IEP meetings. [Daily 15%]
  • Provide support to and mentor Mild/Moderate staff as needed through coaching of legal and special education best practices. [Daily, 10%]
  • Provide assistance to the Directors of Special Education and on-site assistance to building principals, district departments, and staff in effectively implementing Mild/Moderate supports. [Daily, 10%]
  • Assess quality of classroom instruction by observing, communicating, coaching, providing guidance on evaluations and IEPs, and coordinating and facilitating training sessions to ensure appropriate identification, effective program operation, compliance, and progress on student IEP goals. [Daily, 5%]
  • Using language and culture skills as appropriate, facilitate verbal and written communication between staff, students, and families for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and resolving conflicts. [Daily, 5%]
  • Administer local, state, and federal statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and administrative directives pertaining to curriculum, instruction, and assessment services for supporting Mild/Moderate staff and students, including preparing documentation and reports. [Daily, 5%]
  • Conduct evaluations of students at the request of Special Education Directors, Assistant Directors including contacting outside evaluators and service providers, file reviews, contacting outside providers, parent interviews, direct assessment of students, observations, report writing, interpreting data, team debriefs and the complete IEP process. [Weekly, 5%]
  • With the Directors of Special Education, plan, implement, and monitor all district services relating to the Mild/Moderate supports. [Weekly, 5%]
  • Represent Mild/Moderate needs at federal, regional, state, and local meetings and task forces as assigned by the Directors of Special Education. Participate in program governance regularly. [Monthly, 5%]
  • Collaborate with district departments, schools, staff, and local agencies regarding Mild/Moderate supports. Regularly facilitate multi-stakeholder groups to ensure that family and staff suggestions are included in Mild/Moderate supports and operations. [Monthly, 5%]
  • Prepare and maintain Part B budget funds to be used for curriculum and other educational resources for Mild/Moderate supports. [Monthly, 5%]
  • Support and Collaborate with District High Incidence Assistive Technology Team (HIAT) with best practices concerning educational assistive technology, budgeting, ordering and ongoing management of specific technology platforms. [Monthly, 5%]
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. [Daily, 5%]

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education or 4 years field experience.
  • Three (3) years of instructional leadership or Special Education experience.
  • Knowledge of Colorado’s State Eligibility Criteria for all eligibility categories
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of eligibility criteria for SLD, DD, and OHI
  • Knowledge and understanding of grade-level Colorado State Standards
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Intermediate organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to effectively motivate and supervise people.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to make effective oral presentations and prepare concise written reports to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
  • Ability to participate in ongoing staff development to enhance the knowledge base as a district staff developer, including active participation in district level initiatives.
  • Ability to promote and follow the Board of Education policies, District policies, and building and department procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required for hire.
  • Knowledge and Understanding of IEP process and laws
  • Knowledge of computer based IEP system currently in use

Required Certificates, Licenses, And Registrations

All certifications, licenses, and registrations must be valid and unexpired.

  • Colorado Department of Education (CDE) teaching license
  • CDE Special Education Generalist (Ages 5-21) endorsement
  • Colorado driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal education beyond a Master’s degree
  • Five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience
  • Colorado Administrator/Principal License
