JOB TITLE: ELEMENTARY LIBRARIAN
JOB DESCRIPTION NARRATIVE:
The media centers are designed to aid in the education of its youth and offer to every child the opportunity to have and use materials to enrich his/her knowledge and aid in the development of character and growth. A flexible service, with a main goal to promote more library or material center interest and usage is our responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge:
Master’s degree with librarian/media specialist certification
Skills:
Able to work with students and staff. Must possess skills in library system,
organization skills, light typing and clerical skills.
Machines/Equipment:
Computer, printer, telephone, copy machine, A/V equipment, televisions, VCRs,
overhead projectors, film projectors, multi-media
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- OBJECTIVES - The general objectives are common to all schools. They are to serve over-all objectives of education.
- Participate effectively in the school program as it strives to meet the needs of pupils, teachers, parents, and other community members.
- Provide students with the educational materials and services most appropriate and meaningful in their growth and development as individuals.
- Stimulate and guide pupils in all phases of their reading, so they may achieve satisfaction and enjoyment and grow in judgment and appreciation of books.
- Provide library or materials center experience for students to develop helpful interest, make personal adjustments, and to acquire desirable social attitudes.
- Help students to become skillful and discriminating users of libraries or materials centers and of printed and audio-visual materials.
- Introduce pupils to community libraries as early as possible so their educational and cultural growth might continue.
- Assist teachers in selection and enrichment materials to continue growth of student.
- Cooperate with other librarians and community leaders in developing an over-all media program for the community
- Urge students to become skillful and ethical users of computer technology to prepare for lifelong learning in a technological society.
- Provide basic reference and bibliographic training to students to enhance research skills and information retrieval.
- RESPONSIBILITIES - The administration, school board, teachers and librarian share responsibilities and the opportunity to recognize the importance of books, curriculum materials, and enrichment tools.

- Evaluation and policy of censorship
- Criteria for removal of books
- Establish lending/gift policy
- Provide cooperative effort and maintain public relations with patrons and other libraries
- CONSULTING - The library specialist actively serves with all administrators, teachers, chairpersons of departments and assists in selection of enrichment materials, as well as orientation instruction to the pupils.
- Orientation - to acquaint students in library usage
- Ordering materials for curriculum enrichment
- Cataloging, processing of materials
- Balancing of collection
- Criteria for audio visual equipment/materials
- Scheduling classes, events to center
- Interpret policies/cooperate with other libraries
- Cooperate with Administration on special programs budget/purchasing
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor/principal
