This is an administrative position responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing Service in planning, supervising and administering institutional, professional and non-professional nursing activities. Demonstrates readiness and ability to accommodate the needs of all nursing home residents and their families, including LGBT residents. Work is performed under general supervision of the Director of Nursing Service, with wide latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in providing instruction and assigning tasks to subordinates. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities listed as examples only and in

§ Relieves Director of Nursing Service during her absence;
§ Relieves supervisors as needed;
§ Evaluates the quality of nursing care by making daily rounds, visiting patients, investigating complaints, and making rounds with physicians;
§ Responsible for coordinating services provided by nursing personnel and other service providers;
§ Interprets nursing facility policy and procedures to nursing staff;
§ Promotes staff compliance with administration, technical procedures, and established policies;
§ Participates in staff conferences and meetings when requested or when appropriate;
§ Supports and participates in in-service education programs;
§ Works with shift supervisors to continually upgrade and improve nursing care of patients;
§ Assists in interpreting the goals and objectives of the facility to nursing personnel;
§ Maintains and fosters cordial relationships with patients, families, interested persons and community organizations;
§ Represents the Nursing Facility in professional and community activities;
§ Promotes efficient and effective working relationships with administration, medical staff, the departments, volunteers and agencies affiliated with the Nursing Facility;
§ Assists in the selection and recommends for appointment members of the nursing service staff and participates in defining their respective duties;
§ Assists in interviewing applicants for employment;
§ Approves final weekly scheduling of staff with supervisors and makes necessary changes as needed;
§ Recommends staff changes in scheduling of personnel;
§ Assists in developing and maintaining nursing service objectives and nursing practice standards;
§ Assists in formulating nursing service policies and procedures;
§ Arranges patients’ appointments for rehabilitative services in and outside of the facility;
§ Evaluates subordinate staff and confers with them on any problem areas; § Serves on committees at the pleasure of administration;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse AND either:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in professional nursing activities, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory position; or
B) Graduation from an approved three (3) year school of nursing and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in professional nursing activities, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory position; or
C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in professional nursing activities, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory position.
