What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Studies Teacher (Middle School) position at Chelsea School?
Chelsea School is seeking a full time Social Studies teacher for the 2026-27 school year. This teacher would primarily be responsible for teaching middle school (grades 5-8), and some high school following the Prince George's County Curriculum. Candidates should have content knowledge in US and World History, Geography, and Government. Chelsea School is a nonpublic special education school serving students with learning disabilities.
Chelsea School will be relocating its campus to 7750 Montpelier Road, Laurel, MD as of July 1, 2026.
To qualify for this position, the candidate:
- Must possess a Bachelor's Degree in a related field
- Must be eligible for certification in Special Education by the Maryland State Department of Education
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Plan, develop and present organized learning opportunities for students
- Create a classroom environment that optimizes student learning and engagement
- Contribute positively to school-wide environment that values respect and tolerance
- Under supervision of the Director of Education, implement the required curriculum in given subject area
- Collaborate with staff (including related service providers) to ensure delivery of optimal education program for students
- As a student advisor, coordinate the student’s academic program, IEP services and parent communication
- Communicate with supervisor(s), colleagues, students, families and local jurisdictions using verbal, written and electronic means as needed to perform duties effectively
- Participate in staff development programs
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and other additionally scheduled meetings
- Maintain certification in good standing with the State of Maryland

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
