What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chehalis- Temporary Custodial Student Worker 2025-2026 position at Chehalis Maintenance and Custodial?
Position Summary:
Under supervision, the student worker will assist with custodial and general cleaning tasks to help maintain safe, clean, and orderly facilities within the school district. This is a learning and support role that provides practical experience in facility maintenance and custodial operations. Position is 2 hours per day for the remainder of the 25/26 school year. Hours will be scheduled around the student’s academic commitments, with flexibility.

Essential Job Functions
- Perform light custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, emptying trash and recycling receptacles.
- Clean and maintain assigned areas including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, lockers, cafeteria—keeping them neat, sanitary and safe.
- Assist in restocking paper goods, soap dispensers, and other cleaning supplies in restrooms and common areas.
- Assist with setup and teardown of furniture and equipment for school events (e.g., assemblies, meetings) as directed.
- Report maintenance or safety issues (e.g., broken furniture, spills, unsafe conditions) to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Follow established cleaning procedures and safety practices when using custodial equipment, supplies and chemicals.
- Organize materials and keep the work area tidy.
- Adhere to school security and building‐access procedures (locking/ unlocking, securing doors as assigned).
- Assist in grounds‐adjacent tasks when needed (e.g., picking up litter, clearing walkways) as directed.
- Exhibit punctuality, reliability, professionalism and cooperation with staff and students.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Age 18 preferred, age 16 considered with work permit.
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions, work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic physical ability: standing for long periods, bending, reaching, carrying moderate weight (e.g., trash bags, boxes).
- Good communication skills; ability to interact courteously with students, staff and the public.
- Willingness to learn custodial practices, safe handling of cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Reliable transportation or ability to arrive at assigned building/site on time for assigned shifts.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and adjust to changing assignments or priorities.
- Must pass a criminal justice fingerprint/background check.
Education Required:
- Must be a current student in good academic standing.
Hourly Pay Rate: minimum wage $16.66 (effective Jan. 1, 2025)
Reports To: Head Custodian and Facilities Supervisor
Compensation and Benefits:
The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board and DRS (Washington State Department of Retirement Systems) eligibility and benefits. This position is not anticipated to meet the SEBB eligibility requirements. Accrued paid sick leave at a rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked, starting on first day of employment.
