What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard Specialist – Camp Kingfisher position at Chattahoochee Nature Center?
Position Overview
The Lifeguard Specialist leads the safe implementation of the swimming program for campers at Camp Kingfisher. Lifeguards are also responsible for overseeing 6 swimming periods per day, maintaining pool facilities, and fulfilling additional specialist duties at camp.
All staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to:
- lead campers as a positive, caring role model
- provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences
- help campers grow and learn through challenges
Essential Functions
- Maintain high standards of safety, health, and cleanliness during all activities in pool area
- Implement and supervise all aspects of pool program for campers for campers entering grades pre-K-9
- Administer swim tests and efficiently communicate pool rules and expectations
- Water testing and monitoring chemical levels
- Create and lead programs for when pool is closed
- Support program areas such as aftercare, waterfront, all camp activities, and any other areas as directed
- Substitute as a counselor as needed
- Clean pool and camp facilities daily
- Attend weekly camp staff and specialist meetings
- Complete additional duties as assigned
- Lifeguard for 2-4 after hours camp programs such as camper late night
- Prepare and deliver rain plans during inclement weather
- Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
- Keep track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work
- Complete additional duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
- Must be able to lift and carry a canoe
- Valid driver’s license or state issued ID
Skills
- Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification, course provided
- Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
- Experience (and passion for) teaching or working with children
- Ability to adhere to and to enforce Camp Kingfisher’s water safety procedures
- Background in child care, camps, or prior lifeguarding
