What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Counselor– Camp Kingfisher position at Chattahoochee Nature Center?
Position Overview
As primary caregivers for each camper in their group, Camp Counselors must be fun, dynamic and safety conscious. Camp Counselors plan and implement daily schedules, lead activities and songs, coordinate with other counselors, and communicate with parents.
All staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to:
- lead campers as a positive, caring role model
- provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences
- help campers grow and learn through challenges
Essential Functions
- Supervise groups of children grades rising K-7th in an outdoor setting
- Lead camper activities with excellence and enthusiasm
- Develop and implement environmental education activities (hikes, animal demonstrations, science exploration activities) on a daily basis, program resources provided
- Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff
- Clean camp facilities as needed/required
- Handle captive wildlife daily in camp programs
- Attend weekly camp staff meetings and trainings
- Assist in program areas such as waterfront, pool, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed
- Help support Camp Kingfishers aftercare program
- Complete additional duties as assigned
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programing (older camper groups)
- Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
- Keeping track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
- Must be able to lift over 20 pounds
- Valid driver’s license or state issued ID
Skills
- Experience (and passion for) teaching or working with children
- Comfortable in an outdoor setting
- Background in environmental education, natural history, education, childcare, or camps
- Willingness to handle captive wildlife, training provided
- Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one
- Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided
