The Radio Systems Technician I supports the maintenance, programming, documentation, and operational readiness of public safety radio communications equipment and related infrastructure across Chatham County. This position assists with radio sites, tornado warning sirens, subscriber radios, and associated communications equipment to help ensure reliable communications for emergency services and partner agencies. 

Under the general supervision of the Radio Systems Manager, you will:
 

  • Program, configure, template, and troubleshoot public safety radios, including portable, mobile, base, and consolette units.
  • Coordinate installations, removals, repairs, and related work with approved vendors.
  • Verify and document completed radio installation or repair work, including radio ID, alias, serial number, vehicle assignment, and operational status.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for radios, serial numbers, radio IDs, aliases, accessories, spare parts, and assigned equipment.
  • Coordinate parts, supplies, tools, and equipment needed for radio system operations.
  • Conduct ground-level inspections of radio sites, shelters, equipment rooms, generators, UPS equipment, grounding systems, and related infrastructure.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on emergency warning systems.
  • Conduct signal testing, field inspections, and basic coverage checks to support radio system performance assessments.
  • Assist with radio system equipment upgrades, replacements, integrations, and related projects.
  • Provide technical support during emergencies, disasters, special events, activations, or system outages.
  • Prepare documentation and reports related to inspections, maintenance, radio programming, equipment assignments, and system health.
  • Follow established programming, documentation, inventory, and security procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED, and  
  • A two (2) year vocational degree in Electronic Technology, Information Technology, Communications Technology, or a related field; or 
  • Equivalent military training; and 
  • At least one (1) year of experience in radio communications, electronics, public safety communications, telecommunications, IT/network support, or related technical work; or 
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of RF systems, antennas, coax, grounding, DC power, networked communications equipment, and troubleshooting practices. 
  • Experience with P25 trunked radio systems, 700/800 MHz public safety communications, simulcast systems, warning sirens, or emergency communications systems. 
  • Experience with Motorola public safety radio equipment, CPS, Radio Management, Provisioning Manager, or similar radio programming software. 
  • Strong documentation, inventory control, and attention-to-detail skills. 

Additional Requirements 

  • Must obtain the following within the specified timeframes:
    • Georgia Class F Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire
    • FCC Amateur Radio Technician License within six (6) months
    • FCC Amateur Radio General License within twelve (12) months
  • Additional training and technical certifications may be required based on job duties.
