Nature Center Aide

The Charter Township of Shelby Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center is now accepting applications for a part-time Nature Center Aide. The schedule for this position would be up to 20 hours a week (Monday-Sunday) between the hours of 10am - 6pm. The Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center is located within our River Bends Park (4101 River Bends Drive, Shelby Township, MI 48317). The beginning wage is $15.39 per hour, no benefits.

Some of the job duties associated with this classification would include, but would not be limited to:

  • Plan, prepare, and lead programs (guided hikes, school field trips, home school programs, scout badges, and birthday parties).
  • Greet and assist all visitors and participants in a cordial, informational, and welcoming manner.
  • Register patrons for programs in recreation software and process any confirmation/cancellation paperwork.
  • Assist in the booking, scheduling, and set-up/take-down of Nature Center rentals, including field trips, outreaches, room rentals, and birthday parties.
  • Provide support for special events.
  • Be willing to work a flexible schedule with some evenings and holidays (for animal care)
  • Provide daily care for animal ambassadors, including (but not limited to): preparing/distributing animal diets; providing routine husbandry and cleaning of enclosures; and maintaining accurate record keeping and reports.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all our guests.
    • Answer/respond to all phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner.
  • Ensure Nature Center is always clean and presentable.
  • Performs other duties of this position or related positions as may become necessary or as directed by the Nature Center Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Interest in nature, environmental education, or outdoor recreation
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences, including children and families
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team
