Position Overview
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall direction, leadership, and administration of the clinical laboratory.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the clinical laboratory in a manner that is safe and compliant with OSHA standards and applicable local regulations.
- Ensure that the environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees and patients are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
- Assist Principal Investigators, Site Director, and Clinical Research Coordinators with logistics and planning of all study procedures.
- Initiates quality-control measures and monitors work quality for compliance with laboratory standards.
- Evaluate existing systems and processes and develop corrective action plans for service/quality trends identified. Initiates changes and monitors improvement.
- Purchases supplies for the laboratory. Recommends procurement of new laboratory equipment and monitors maintenance/repair needs of existing equipment.
- Monitor specimen storage to ensure sample integrity.
- Record and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently.
- Ensure that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel responsible for any aspect of the laboratory process.
- Perform clinical tasks including, but not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, ECG, phlebotomy, specimen packing and shipping.
- Participate in creating and maintaining staffing plans for the laboratory team, including making recommendations for hiring additional staff, when needed.
- Assist in identifying and securing, through hiring and interview processes, candidates for open roles in the laboratory department.

- Familiarity with how to safely transport hazardous materials in accordance with IATA training and Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR).
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field preferred; RN and/or LPN preferred.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certificate preferred.
- International Air Transport Association (IATA) certificate preferred.
- OSHA training certificate preferred.
- Four to six years of experience in a laboratory environment with similar functions.
- Minimum of 2 years management experience required.
- Phlebotomy experience a plus.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
