Position Overview
The Charter Middle School for Law and Social Justice is seeking a Middle School Health/Physical Education Teacher who is passionate about promoting student wellness, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle habits.
The ideal candidate will create engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support students in building physical fitness, teamwork skills, and foundational health knowledge. The teacher will foster a positive and inclusive environment where students develop confidence, learn the value of physical activity, and gain the tools needed to maintain lifelong wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and implement engaging Health and Physical Education lessons aligned with New York State Learning Standards for grades 6–8
Develop unit and lesson plans using Understanding by Design (UbD) to ensure clear learning goals and outcomes
Provide a variety of physical activities and movement-based instruction that build coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship
Teach essential health concepts, including nutrition, personal wellness, emotional health, decision-making, and healthy relationships
Incorporate cooperative games, fitness activities, and skill development appropriate for middle school students
Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and abilities
Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction
Maintain a structured, safe, and inclusive classroom and physical activity environment
Provide clear and timely feedback to students and families regarding student participation and progress
Collaborate with colleagues and instructional leaders to strengthen instruction and support student growth
Participate in professional development, grade-level meetings, and school-wide initiatives
Support school wellness programs, physical activity events, and initiatives that promote student health
Implement the use of technology (iPads) during instruction

- Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Physical Education, or a related field
Minimum of two (2) years of teaching experience in 6-8 th grade.
New York State Teaching Certification in Physical Education or Health (or actively working toward certification)
Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills
Ability to create a safe, engaging, and student-centered learning environment
Understanding of middle school student development and health education topics
Ability to motivate students and encourage participation in physical activity
Experience teaching physical education or health at the middle school level
