POSITION: Vocal Music Teacher - Middle School

REPORTS TO: Principal - Charlotte Middle School

ASSIGNMENT/RESPONSIBILITY

The middle school vocal music teacher is responsible for overseeing the middle school branch of the vocal music program. This includes direct instruction to students in vocal music and adjacent courses, including (but not limited to) Choir, Musical Theater, Adaptive Music, and Exploration of Music. A wide variety of tasks are performed in the teaching-learning process for students, the primary one being to help students develop musical and social emotional skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible citizens.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of bachelor’s degree in music education, vocal performance, or other related field. State of Michigan JX or JQ teacher certification required. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of secondary vocal music curriculum and philosophy, effective instruction principles, assessment procedures and learning and motivation theory. The ideal candidate will have a solid knowledge base of Vocal Pedagogy, specifically with adolescent and changing voices. Proficient piano/keyboard skills are preferred. Demonstrates the personal qualities of an effective teacher including the ability to collaborate with other staff and the ability to communicate well with a wide variety of audiences both in writing and verbally. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to coordinate and direct the work of others. Demonstrated ability to interact proactively with parents.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Establish and maintain an instructional environment which will be supportive of positive behavior change and academic achievement for the students.
• Develop and implement education plans, performance objectives, and daily instructional plans for students.
• Continue to establish and maintain a standard of excellence set by the Charlotte music program.
• Work collaboratively with the K-12 music department.
• Implements instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
• Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
• Teaches District approved curriculum.
• Assists in assessing changing curricular needs and offers plans for improvement.
• Maintains effective and efficient record keeping procedures.
• Provides a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.
• Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
• Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
• Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community. Assumes responsibility for meeting course and school-wide student performance goals.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by their supervisor.
• All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established as part of the annual performance planning process or as the result of organizational planning.
• Maintain attendance records and other data, records, and reports required.
• Adhere to all policies and procedures of the School District.
• Establish and maintain constructive professional relationships with the school staff, parents/guardians, and others, if applicable.
• Maintain classroom area and furnishings in appropriate condition.
• Cooperatively work with any paraprofessional assigned and supervise participating volunteers and student trainees.
• Adhere to the school schedule and calendar.
• Collaboratively schedule and attend concerts, festivals, and events related to the vocal music program and courses.
• Attend and participate in all scheduled meetings.
• Provide assistance to substitute teaching personnel as needed.
• Perform all job related duties as assigned.
