The Charlotte Museum of History is seeking a dynamic, people-focused Museum Associate to serve as the front line of our visitor experience. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment and is excited to grow into a long-term career in museums.
Museum Associates are often the first and last impression of the museum. They welcome guests, lead tours, support programs and events, and help ensure that every visitor has an engaging, memorable experience. This role also supports daily operations across the site, making it a strong foundation for future growth within the organization.
This role is designed as an entry point into museum careers, with a clear pathway to full-time opportunities for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
Guest Experience & Public Engagement (40%)
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all museum guests during, providing a welcoming and informed experience
- Provide accurate, engaging information about the museum, exhibitions, and Charlotte history
- Lead public tours and assist with interpretive programming as needed
- Support school groups and field trips, helping ensure smooth and engaging visits
- Represent the museum with professionalism, energy, and enthusiasm
- Ability to answer and direct phone calls in a professional and courteous manner
Admissions, Retail & Front Desk (25%)
- Operate the front desk and point-of-sale system for admissions, memberships, and retail purchases
- Promote memberships, programs, and upcoming events
- Maintain the appearance and organization of the front desk and museum store
- Assist with inventory, restocking, and merchandising
- Experience handling cash and completing transactions with accuracy and attention to detail
Programs, Events & Rentals Support (20%)
- Assist with setup, breakdown, and execution of public programs and private events
- Provide on-site support during rentals, including guest wayfinding and basic logistics
- Work some evenings and weekends for events and special programs with advance notice
Operations & Team Support (15%)
- Support general museum operations, including opening/closing procedures and daily walkthroughs
- Assist staff across departments as needed to ensure smooth day-to-day operations
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to deliver a high-quality visitor experience
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in customer service, hospitality, museums, or a related field
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable speaking with the public and leading groups
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable using computers and standard office equipment and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)
- Interest in history, museums, or public engagement
- Reliable, proactive, and team-oriented
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
WHAT WE OFFER
· 25-30 hours per week minimum at starting rate of $20.00/hour
