Charles Town Utility Board is seeking a motivated and dependable Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT) to join our wastewater operations team. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity to build a rewarding career protecting public health and the environment while receiving hands-on training from experienced operators. Salary consideration based on qualifications and experience.
Starting pay is $19.00 per hour, with additional compensation based on qualifications and experience.
Position Summary
The Wastewater Operator in Training (OIT) assists certified operators in the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the wastewater treatment facility and collection system. Under direct supervision, the successful candidate will learn treatment processes, equipment operation, preventive maintenance, laboratory sampling, and regulatory compliance while working toward professional certification.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist with the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and collection system.
- Assist with plant performance, operational reports and laboratory data.
- Perform inspection, maintenance, repair, and locating work on collection lines and pump stations.
- Perform preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Inspect facilities and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Respond to alarms and operational issues under the direction of certified operators.
- Follow all safety procedures and environmental regulations.
- Participate in training programs and complete certification requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver's license.
- Valid Operator-in-Training (OIT) certificate upon hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Certification Requirements
- Must maintain a valid driver's license and be available for emergency response.
- Must hold a valid Operator-in-Training (OIT) certificate upon hire.
- Must attempt Class I Wastewater Operator certification within 18 months of employment.
- Employees are encouraged to continue advancing their professional development by pursuing Class II Wastewater Operator certification and Class C certification.
