On-Call Relief Advocate (Per Diem)

Position Summary The On-Call Relief Advocate (Per Diem) provides flexible, on-call coverage across agency programs to ensure continuity of services during employee absences, vacations, vacancies, trainings, emergencies, or periods of increased client need. The position provides trauma-informed advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, and supportive services to survivors of domestic violence while promoting safety, empowerment, confidentiality, and access to resources. Assignments may include coverage for the 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, non-residential advocacy, court advocacy, housing services, community outreach, transportation, and other program responsibilities based on agency needs and the employee's training. The Relief Advocate is cross-trained to support multiple programs and must be able to adapt to changing assignments while maintaining compliance with agency policies, funding requirements, and documentation standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The duties listed below are representative of the work performed and are not intended to be an exhaustive list. Responsibilities may be modified based on agency needs and funding requirements. Provide trauma-informed advocacy and support to survivors of domestic violence. Provide coverage for agency programs during employee absences, vacations, vacancies, trainings, emergencies, or periods of increased client need. Answer the 24-hour domestic violence hotline, provide crisis intervention, safety planning, information, referrals, and complete required documentation. Provide shelter support, including resident advocacy, conflict resolution, safety monitoring, and resource coordination. Conduct client intakes, assessments, advocacy, follow-up services, and safety planning as assigned. Assist clients in accessing community resources, housing, financial assistance, transportation, legal resources, and other supportive services. Provide court accompaniment and advocacy, law enforcement response, community outreach, or other victim advocacy services as assigned. Transport clients when appropriate and in accordance with agency policy. Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records, statistics, and reports in compliance with agency, OCFS, and funding requirements. Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, supervision, and professional development activities. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all agency policies, grant requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local laws. Assist with administrative tasks, data entry, filing, supply management, or other agency operations as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the continuity and quality of agency services. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field preferred; an Associate's degree with relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience in domestic violence services, victim advocacy, crisis intervention, human services, or a related field preferred. Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, safety planning, and community resources. Ability to communicate effectively and work professionally with diverse populations. Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in crisis situations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems. Valid New York State driver's license and reliable transportation. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with agency staff and community partners.
Required Training
Completion of OPDV Core Domestic Violence Advocate Training within six (6) months of hire, if not previously completed. Mandated Reporter Training. HIPAA and Confidentiality Training. Agency orientation and required safety procedures. Any additional training required by OCFS, OPDV, funding sources, or the agency. Confidentiality Due to the sensitive nature of services provided, employees are required to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client, agency, and personnel information in accordance with agency policy and applicable federal and New York State laws.
Working Conditions This is an on-call, per diem position. Work assignments may occur in the agency office, emergency shelter, courthouse, community settings, partner agencies, or other service locations. Hours are based on agency need and employee availability. Coverage may be requested for planned absences (vacation, training, leave), unplanned absences (illness), emergencies, vacancies, or periods of increased client demand. Shifts will be primarily days, with the exception of hotline coverage which may include, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments. There is no guarantee of a minimum number of work hours. May require standing, walking, lifting up to 25 pounds, responding to emergencies, and transporting clients. Local travel is required.
