Controller / Accounting Manager
Champion Fasteners, Inc. is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Controller / Accounting Manager to oversee daily accounting functions, support office operations, and provide meaningful financial insight to ownership and management.
Champion Fasteners is a locally owned industrial supply and fastener distributor serving construction, manufacturing, maintenance, and industrial customers. This is an important role within a small-business environment where accuracy, initiative, confidentiality, and the ability to manage broad responsibilities are essential.
This position will initially be the primary person responsible for accounting and related administrative functions. As the company grows, the role is expected to expand and may include direct reports in the future.
Position Summary
The Controller / Accounting Manager will manage day-to-day accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, payroll support, monthly close, financial reporting, sales tax filings, and general ledger accuracy.
This person will also help improve processes, strengthen internal controls, and provide financial analysis to support business decisions. The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, highly accurate, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, inventory-based small business.
This role requires someone who can perform daily accounting tasks while also thinking strategically about cash flow, profitability, inventory, process improvement, and long-term business growth.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting & Financial Management
- Manage accounts payable, including invoice entry, vendor payments, vendor statement reconciliation, and payment scheduling.
- Manage accounts receivable, including customer invoicing, payment posting, customer account reconciliation, collections follow-up, and cash application.
- Maintain accurate general ledger records and ensure transactions are properly coded and recorded.
- Prepare journal entries and support accurate monthly close procedures.
- Perform bank, credit card, loan, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports.
- Review income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, expenses, and operating results with ownership and management.
- Process or support weekly payroll and coordinate with payroll providers as needed.
- Prepare and file sales tax reports and other routine business compliance filings.
- Monitor cash flow and assist ownership with cash planning and working capital management.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and performance reporting.
- Support year-end tax preparation and work directly with the company’s outside CPA firm.
- Help maintain strong internal controls and accurate financial records.
Inventory, Systems & Process Improvement
- Use QuickBooks for daily accounting activities, reporting, reconciliations, and financial review.
- Learn and work within the company’s industry-specific POS, ERP, order entry, and inventory management systems.
- Reconcile accounting data with inventory records and assist in maintaining inventory accuracy.
- Analyze gross margin, cost of goods sold, inventory activity, purchasing activity, and operating expenses.
- Use Excel to review data, identify trends, and prepare meaningful reports for management.
- Identify discrepancies, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improved controls or processes.
- Assist with implementation of system, reporting, or procedural improvements.
- Support better visibility into financial performance, inventory, purchasing, sales, and operations.
Office & Administrative Support
- Maintain organized electronic and physical accounting records.
- Support purchasing, receiving, vendor, customer, and inventory documentation processes.
- Help coordinate administrative procedures related to accounting and office operations.
- Assist with insurance, banking, compliance, vendor, customer, and employee documentation as needed.
- Support special projects and operational reporting for ownership and management.
Required Qualifications
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Hands-on experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer billing, vendor payments, collections, and account reconciliation.
- Experience maintaining general ledger accuracy, preparing journal entries, and supporting monthly close procedures.
- Strong understanding of basic accounting principles, accrual accounting, debits and credits, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience preparing or supporting monthly financial reports, balance sheet reconciliations, bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations, and year-end CPA/tax support.
- Experience with payroll processing, payroll reporting, sales tax filings, and other routine business compliance requirements.
- Strong QuickBooks experience required.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills required, including formulas, data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
- Ability to analyze financial data and provide useful insight related to cash flow, expenses, inventory, margins, and business performance.
- Ability to learn and work within industry-specific POS, ERP, inventory, or order management systems.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on role while supporting ownership, management, and daily business operations.
- High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial, employee, vendor, and customer information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- CPA, CMA, or public accounting experience is a plus but not required.
- Experience in a distribution, wholesale, industrial supply, manufacturing, retail, or other inventory-based business.
- Experience with inventory accounting, cost of goods sold, gross margin analysis, purchasing, or distribution accounting.
- Experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, reporting tools, or system workflows.
- Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and management reporting.
- Experience in a small business or closely held company environment.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup formulas, SUMIF/SUMIFS, data validation, and financial reporting tools.
- Ability to help build and lead the accounting function as the company grows.

Compensation
Compensation will be based on the candidate’s accounting background, QuickBooks experience, Excel skills, payroll and tax filing experience, inventory/accounting knowledge, month-end close experience, and ability to provide financial insight to ownership and management.
