Description
SUMMARY
The Pottery Instructor is responsible for assisting the Pottery Supervisor in planning, organizing, and instructing pottery and ceramic courses. The Pottery Instructor will provide and lead enriching programs to youth age 6 to adults of all ages and abilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Bachelors in Fine Arts in Studio Ceramics or Bachelors in Art Education with emphasis or experience in ceramics
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of ceramics, clays, glazes, and firing techniques
- Mastery of hand building and wheel throwing and an ability to teach these skills to participants of all ages
- Experience working with youth and adults
- POSITIVE CAN DO TEAM ATTITUDE
SUPERVISION
The Pottery Instructor reports directly to the Pottery Supervisor
TRAINING CAN BE OBTAINED THROUGH CHAMPAIGN PARK DISTRICT
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification through American Heart Association or accredited agency
- Concussion training through the Center for Disease Control
- Facility training
- Anyone who will be driving a Champaign Park District vehicle will need to complete and pass a driving test from one of our certified Champaign Park District trainers
- Mandated reporter certification
CLASSIFICATION
- Non-Exempt, hourly
- Part-time
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing the pottery classes and activities
- Experience in hand building and wheel throwing pottery making techniques
- Ability to break down complex processes into simple step-by-step instructions
- Able to identify common beginner mistakes in student work, then communicate solutions
- Ability to teach students of different skill levels and abilities
- Teach proper glaze application techniques
- Develop age and skill level appropriate lessons plans
- Previous teaching experience a plus
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of the public, fellow employees, and him/herself
- Updates class attendance sheets everyday classes meet
- Provides the Pottery Studio Supervisor with regular class updates
- Assists the Pottery Studio Supervisor with firing, loading and unloading the kilns
- Cleans equipment and supplies used
- Responsible for maintaining and keeping all equipment and supplies in proper storage areas
- Completes time clock forms and accident reports in a timely manner
- Hand out and retrieve parent participant emergency forms and program evaluations in a timely manner
- Communicates effectively with staff, participants, and parents
- Other duties as assigned
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be able to present in front of a group while demonstrating ceramics technique
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time
- Bending, stooping, and/or lifting may be required
- May need to respond quickly and accurately
- Frequently lifting up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be able to work in a shared office environment
- Work under pressure with interruptions
- Must be able to teach in changing work environment depending on where classes are scheduled
- May be exposed to hazardous art and craft chemicals
- May be exposed to all weather conditions

- Must be able to represent the district in a positive manner
- Must be able to work well with people, resolve problems fairly and with judgment in keeping with the mission of the district
- Should exercise creativity and resourcefulness in developing and implementing pottery classes
- Must be able to respond quickly and accurately to changing project conditions
- Should be safety conscious at all times
