Position Open to Current and former CGA employees only. Oversees the day-to-day administrative operations of the Public Health Committee.  Acts on behalf of and in consultation with the committee co-chairs to supervise full-time and sessional committee staff, schedule committee meetings and hearings, maintain official records of committee actions, and coordinate committee activities with other legislative offices, agencies of state government and the public. Work requires the ability to function at the highest level of independence and political sensitivity using advanced interpersonal skills and sound judgment.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of committee co-chairs.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervises clerical staff, interns, and paraprofessionals.

1. Tracks, processes, and schedules legislation for committee review in accordance with the Joint Rules;

2. Oversees all administrative details of committee meetings and hearings including scheduling, notification, preparation of materials, coordination of witnesses, taping, minutes, and follow-up;

3. Assigns, directs, and supervises the activities of full-time and part-time committee staff and assists co-chairs in the recruitment and selection of staff;

4. Acts as information officer for the committee, responding to questions from the public, press, agencies or interested groups and disseminating notices, reports and other information;

5. Screens and handles committee correspondence, often composing responses or initiating correspondence with little or no direction from the co-chairs;

6. Acts as liaison on behalf of the committee and the co-chairs with legislative offices, state agencies, interested groups and the public and may be called upon to represent the committee or co-chairs at meetings;

7. May collect, assemble, analyze, and summarize information for the committee on an issue or piece of legislation;

8. Maintains all committee records;

9. May coordinate staff and support activities for a significant number of subcommittees operating concurrently and independently of the whole committee;

10. May develop, design, and assist in training committee staff

11. May serve as mentor for committee staff;

12. May be required to develop, oversee and utilize specialized data processing equipment or computer programs to track and coordinate committee work;

13. Other related duties as required.

1. Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of advanced administrative, public service or business experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Requires at least two years of legislative experience beyond the level of basic clerical duties and a demonstrated knowledge of the legislative process and public policy issues.

3. Requires strong demonstrated skill at managing and leading other employees.

4. Requires demonstrated skill in written and oral communication.

5. Requires proven problem solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills in dealing with legislators and others in a wide variety of situations and often under pressure.

6. Requires a general knowledge of government systems and public policy issues.

7. Requires strong interpersonal skills including a high degree of initiative, leadership and tact.

8. Ability to work overtime as needed.
