Overview Of The Director Of Accounting Role
- Direct and manage all aspects of accounting operations, including general ledger, fund accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and student or client billing as applicable.
- Lead preparation, review, and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes in collaboration with senior management and department leaders.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting to leadership, the board, and external stakeholders.
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff to foster a high-performing and collaborative team environment.
- Manage external audits and act as the primary liaison with auditors.
- Establish, maintain, and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance.
- Evaluate financial systems and processes, recommending and implementing improvements to optimize efficiency and accuracy.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals and initiatives.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience, including financial management in a nonprofit environment.
- Experience with nonprofit organizations, endowments, or higher education financial management.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite required.
