CFO Recruit is partnering exclusively with a client in Southern Virginia to appoint a Chief Financial Officer. The CFO will serve as the senior financial steward of the business, balancing day-to-day financial oversight with a forward-looking, strategic perspective. The CFO will be a genuine business partner who has excellent stakeholder management skills and will work collaboratively with the leadership team, divisional General Managers along with banking and audit partners. The CFO will mentor and develop the accounting team and help shape the direction of the business. The role also has responsibility for IT and HR.
Responsibilities
- Lead all financial reporting, month-end close, and audit processes across two corporate entities.
- Oversee the preparation and consolidation of financial results and ensure the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial statements across all operating divisions.
- Maintain and continuously improve internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures appropriate to a multi-entity, multi-site business.
- Manage banking relationships and all covenant reporting obligations associated with asset-based lending facility.
- Oversee treasury operations, cash management and liquidity planning.
- Monitor and actively manage working capital across the business, including inventory, receivables, and payables, in close collaboration with operational General Managers.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of all lender reporting obligations and maintain proactive, trust-based relationships with banking partners.
- Manage tax compliance across entities, coordinating with external advisors as appropriate.
- Oversee preparation and timely filing of corporate tax returns annually.
- Maintain working knowledge of S-Corp taxation, shareholder distributions, and related compliance requirements.
- Manage the annual shareholder dividend process across entities.
- Serve as a genuine strategic partner to the CEO and senior leadership team, not merely a reporter of historical results, but an active contributor to forward-looking decision-making.
- Provide regular insight on margins, expense trends, working capital efficiency, and emerging risks across all divisions.
- Prepare for and present at Board meetings to deliver financial performance reviews, forecasts, and strategic initiatives.
- Contribute actively to the company's five-year strategic planning process, providing financial modelling, scenario analysis, and capital allocation recommendations.
- Evaluate potential acquisition opportunities and growth investments, including financial due diligence, valuation analysis, and integration cost assessment.
- Identify and assess opportunities for organic growth, including new geographic markets, product extensions, and operational efficiencies that could improve returns.
- Liaise regularly with the General Managers of each business unit to support informed decision-making, financial literacy, and performance management.
- Support the design and delivery of management reporting that is genuinely useful to operational leaders, providing clear, timely, and actionable insights.
- Work with division leaders on annual budget preparation, quarterly reforecasting, and ongoing monitoring against plan.
- Attend and contribute to divisional reviews with the CEO and operational leadership.
- Lead, develop, and retain the internal finance team, creating a culture of high performance, continuous learning, and clear career progression.
- Delegate meaningfully and create space for team members to own their areas fully.
- Develop structured career pathways for finance team members, with transparent goals and regular development conversations.
- Recruit and onboard additional finance talent as required in line with business growth.
- Oversee the company's commercial insurance programme, managing broker relationships, annual renewals, coverage adequacy reviews, and claims oversight across all operating entities.
- Maintain awareness of the company's risk profile across its diverse operating portfolio and ensure insurance coverage remains appropriate as the business evolves.
- Work with legal and operational leadership to ensure appropriate risk management frameworks are in place across key business activities.
- Oversight of HR and IT, providing strategic direction and ensuring both functions are aligned with the operational and growth needs of the business.
Skills/Experience required:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required. CPA or MBA or advanced degree is preferred.
- Proven CFO or senior financial leadership experience, ideally gained within distribution or related sectors.
- Track record of operating effectively across multiple legal entities and operating divisions with distinct financial structures.
- Experience managing audit processes and external advisors.
- Comfortable with asset-based lending facilities, covenant reporting, and lender relationship management.
- Familiarity with S-Corporation accounting and shareholder reporting is highly advantageous. ESOP experience is a bonus but is not required.
- Familiarity with ERP systems, Epicor and Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains experience is advantageous.

The compensation advertized is a guideline of total compensation and offers will be commensurate with experience.
Salary : $250,000 - $400,000
