The Dialysis Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients with acute or chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis treatment. This role involves monitoring patients during dialysis procedures, operating dialysis equipment, administering medications, and educating patients on kidney disease management. The Dialysis Nurse works collaboratively with physicians, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
Qualifications:Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform patient assessments prior to, during, and after dialysis treatments.
- Initiate, monitor, and discontinue hemodialysis treatments in accordance with physician orders and established clinical protocols.
- Operate and maintain dialysis machines and related equipment, ensuring proper functioning and safety.
- Monitor patient vital signs and response to treatment, identifying and responding to complications or adverse reactions.
- Administer medications and intravenous fluids as prescribed.
- Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Educate patients and their families on dialysis procedures, treatment plans, dietary restrictions, and lifestyle modifications.
- Collaborate with physicians, dietitians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Follow infection control and safety standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and organizational policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and facility dialysis regulations.
- Assist with emergency procedures and respond to medical emergencies during dialysis treatments.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing training.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing).
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- Dialysis or nephrology nursing experience preferred.
- Certification in Nephrology Nursing (CNN or CDN) preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of dialysis procedures, nephrology care, and renal disease management.
- Ability to operate dialysis equipment safely and effectively.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and patient education abilities.

- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift or move patients and dialysis equipment as needed.
- Frequent bending, reaching, and manual dexterity required.
