Overview
Cetechs is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Medical Physicist to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective use of radiation in medical settings. This position requires a strong background in medical imaging, radiation therapy, and a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology. The Medical Physicist will collaborate with physicians, technologists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and improve treatment outcomes.

Job Title: Diagnostic Medical Physicist
Location: Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, LA
Availability Requirement: On-site response within 2 business days for urgent tasks

Job Summary:

The Diagnostic Medical Physicist will provide comprehensive diagnostic imaging physics services to support quality assurance, regulatory compliance, patient safety, and radiation protection associated with the use of diagnostic radiology equipment. Duties will include routine and post-repair testing, equipment evaluations, shielding assessments, safety committee support, and compliance reporting aligned with VA, NRC, FDA, ACR, NCRP, and TJC standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Quality Assurance and Performance Testing

  • Conduct annual physics and imaging quality assurance testing on all diagnostic X-ray and imaging systems (radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, mammography, PET, nuclear medicine).
  • Perform initial and post-repair acceptance testing to assess image quality and radiation dose.
  • Evaluate technical factors and patient dose against national benchmarks to ensure optimal balance between diagnostic image quality and radiation safety.
  • Produce detailed, signed written reports of all evaluations, methods used, deficiencies found, and recommendations for corrective action.

2. Radiation Safety and Structural Shielding

  • Provide structural shielding design and acceptance surveys for new or refurbished imaging rooms in compliance with NCRP Report No. 147.
  • Measure radiation doses in adjacent areas to ensure exposures are ALARA and within annual/hourly regulatory limits.

3. Committee and Regulatory Support

  • Participate in the Radiation Safety, Image Quality, and MRI Safety Committees on a quarterly or as-needed basis.
  • Review staff dosimetry records and nuclear medicine documentation in support of NRC compliance.

4. Regulatory Compliance and Documentation

  • Ensure all services meet or exceed applicable VHA Directives, FDA QA criteria, TJC imaging standards, and licensing body requirements (NRC, ACR).
  • Submit all reports and QA documentation to the Radiation Safety Office within 30 days of task completion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Medical Physics, Health Physics, or related discipline.
  • Board Certified in Diagnostic Medical Physics by the ABR (American Board of Radiology) or the ABMP (American Board of Medical Physics).
  • Certification as a Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) by ABMRS (if MRI services provided).
  • Demonstrated understanding of:
  • Diagnostic imaging physics and radiation safety
  • Current ACR, TJC, FDA, and NRC regulations
  • Shielding design principles (e.g., NCRP 147)
  • Federal and VA privacy and security standards

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years directly performing imaging equipment performance evaluations
  • Experience providing QA in VA or healthcare system environments
  • Use of ACR phantoms and diagnostic QA tools/software

Other Requirements:

  • Must respond on-site within 2 business days for urgent post-repair testing or radiation surveys.
  • Ability to write comprehensive technical reports and communicate findings clearly to clinical and administrative personnel.

Travel and Equipment:

  • Must supply testing equipment, including ACR-approved phantoms and dosimetry tools.
