The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial operations of the company through accurate accounting, financial reporting, and analysis related to residential development and construction projects. This role manages key accounting functions including job costing, general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and month-end close.
The Senior Accountant works closely with the Controller, construction management team, and project managers to ensure financial accuracy across development and homebuilding activities.
Key Responsibilities
General Accounting
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accurate recording of financial transactions.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare journal entries and supporting documentation.
- Perform account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
Construction & Development Accounting
- Maintain job cost records for development and residential construction projects.
- Monitor and track construction costs against approved budgets.
- Record and reconcile development costs, vertical construction costs, and capital expenditures.
- Assist with lot inventory accounting and cost allocation to individual homes.
Financial Reporting
- Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis to management.
- Support preparation of internal management reports related to project performance.
Accounts Payable & Vendor Coordination
- Review and process subcontractor and vendor invoices.
- Ensure expenses are properly coded to jobs, projects, and general ledger accounts.
- Coordinate with construction managers and purchasing to verify costs.
Accounting & Construction Team Coordination
- Cooperate with construction managers and accounting staff to ensure accurate tracking of project costs and budgets.
- Provide financial information and documentation needed for project reporting.
- Assist in resolving discrepancies between field operations and accounting records.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies and internal controls.
- Maintain organized documentation for financial transactions and job cost records.
- Assist with external audits, tax preparation, and financial reviews.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
Experience
- 3–6 years of accounting experience.
- Experience in construction, real estate development, or homebuilding preferred.
- Experience with job costing or project-based accounting strongly preferred.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage, Jonas, or similar).
- Advanced Excel skills.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both accounting and operational teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with partnership accounting or real estate investment structures.
- Knowledge of investor tax reporting, including K-1s and partnership tax returns, preferred.
- Familiarity with development entity structures and capital account tracking is a plus.
