Custodian/Maintenance

Reports to: Director of Maintenance & Facilities Location: Maintenance/Oakview

Bargaining Unit: Full-Time Teamsters FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary:

This position works with a dynamic team to provide students with safe, clean, and attractive school buildings and grounds. Along with maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility by coordinating with the day custodian to clean and disinfect the school facilities as well as providing arrangements for classroom activities, meetings and events, and ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe and timely manner.


Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to perform job functions in line with OSHA-WISHA standards.

Essential Functions:

  • Cleans landscaped areas and related items (storm drains, rain gutters, sidewalks, etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding, roof leaks, and removing hazards
  • Maintains landscaping (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, trees, planted areas, fences, playgrounds, etc.) for the purpose of preserving grounds in a safe, attractive, and clean condition
  • Plants various landscaping materials (e.g. lawns, shrubbery, flowers, bark, etc.) for the purpose of keeping areas attractive and protected against erosion
  • Prepares grounds (e.g. athletic fields, playgrounds, courtyards, flower beds, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate and safe areas for assemblies, casual meetings, sporting events, and recreational activities.
  • Works with the Maintenance Secretary to ensure adequate equipment, supplies, and materials are ordered and available for the purpose completing jobs in a timely and efficient manner
  • Transports various items (equipment, supplies, etc.) for the purpose of having needed materials at the worksite to complete tasks
  • Evaluates landscaped areas, equipment, sprinkler systems, and grounds (e.g. athletic fields, playgrounds, parking areas, etc.) for the purpose of identifying repairs and/or replacement needs, maintaining schedules, and preventing erosion
  • Maintains groundskeeping equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of needed equipment in a safe and operational condition
  • Clears snow/ice for sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of staff, students, and the public
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work
  • Works collaboratively with administration and other Maintenance and Facilities staff to problem solve and develop short-term and long-term plans
  • Perform general maintenance and repair work across district buildings and facilities
  • Assist with HVAC system inspections, filter changes, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance
  • Support plumbing repairs including leaks, fixture replacement, drain clearing, and basic pipe work
  • Perform general mechanical repairs on equipment and building systems
  • Complete carpentry tasks including door/window repairs, hardware replacement, framing, drywall patching, and minor construction projects
  • Maintain and repair building components such as ceilings, flooring, walls, and roofing as needed
  • Assist with groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, irrigation repairs, snow removal, and seasonal clean-up
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks according to established schedules
  • Respond promptly to work orders and emergency repair requests
  • Assist with event setup and teardown including furniture movement and room configurations
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, vehicles, and equipment
  • Cleans and disinfects school facilities
  • Maintains floors by vacuuming, mopping, waxing, and buffing as needed
  • Washes windows on a regular basis
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for classroom activities, meetings, athletic contests, and other events
  • Secures facilities and grounds by physically checking windows, inside and outdoor doors, and lights before leaving each day
  • Collaborates with the building administrator, maintenance supervisor, and other building custodians to evaluate maintenance needs of the building and work to develop and implement daily and long-term maintenance requirements as well as inform of any major repairs or damages
  • Moves a variety of items from one location to another
  • Communicates daily with the other custodians to ensure everyone is aware of building activities for that day or the next day
  • Requests equipment and supplies to maintain inventory
  • Establishes and maintains productive, positive, healthy relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Assists other staff as may be required
  • Completes minor repairs to the building, furniture, and equipment
  • Supports and reinforces school/district policies and procedures
  • Actively supports the District’s vision, mission, goals, and culture code
  • Attends trainings and meetings as directed or appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned


Salary:
$27.15 to $31.47 depending on experience

Work schedule: Eight (8) hours per day – 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, 260 days per school year

Benefits: 15 paid holidays, 12 sick leave and 3 personal leave days; SEBB health benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance; DRS State retirement; other fringe benefits as allowed under the Full-Time Teamsters Collective Bargaining Agreement.
