Summary
Manage the accounting function for a large manufacturing and distribution operation in the cement industry. Responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting. Must maintain and ensure team compliance with company policies and applicable accounting standards, including internal controls. The Controller should possess knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX).
Central Plains Cement Company is a wholly owned cement manufacturing subsidiary of Eagle Materials (NYSE: EXP / www.eaglematerials.com). The Sugar Creek plant produces cement used throughout the country’s heartland for the construction of roads, bridges, buildings, energy services, and residential construction.
Nature and Scope
- Planning, directing, and coordinating all accounting functions – financial reporting, AP, AR
- Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
- Work with plant operations to complete monthly forecast and annual budget processes
- Coordinating and preparing internal financial statements
- Coordinating activities of internal and external auditors
- Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
- Owner of the trial balance, ensuring timely completion and accuracy of monthly account reconciliations
- Assessing current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes. Participate in migration to new ERP platform
- Developing and monitoring business performance metrics
- Responsible for day-to-day management of the accounting team – plant accountant, AP (2), AR (2)
- Hiring, developing, and retaining skilled accounting staff
Qualifications
- 7 years of progressive accounting experience
- Full cycle accounting – G/L, Financial Statements, A/R, A/P, Payroll, Budgeting & Forecasting
- ERP a plus
- Degree – 4-year accounting degree required

- Accounting software — Prior experience with an organization utilizing a computerized accounting system. Eagle currently utilizes Microsoft Dynamics and plans to move to Oracle Cloud in the future.
- Spreadsheet software — Demonstrated Microsoft Excel skills required

- Clerical — Strong attention to detail. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
- Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
- Accounting — Knowledge of accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data. Strong investigative and follow-up skills
- English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
- Discretion – Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Management and Organizational skills – Outstanding time management with the ability to prioritize competing projects. A team player willing to lead the team to meet deadlines and get the job done.
