Position Summary
The Director of Virtual and Alternative Learning provides leadership, vision, and management for all district virtual and alternative education programs serving K–12 students. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative instructional models that ensure all students—particularly those seeking flexible, personalized, or nontraditional pathways—have access to high-quality educational opportunities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Program Oversight
- Develop and implement a comprehensive vision and strategic plan for virtual and alternative learning aligned with district goals and state requirements.
- Oversee all virtual, hybrid, and alternative education programs, including full-time online schools, alternative classroom/program, credit recovery, dropout prevention, flexible scheduling, and reengagement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, policies, and reporting requirements related to alternative and virtual education.
- Supervise and evaluate program administrators, teachers, and support staff within virtual and alternative learning environments.
Program Development and Innovation
- Design, implement, and scale innovative learning models that support diverse student needs, including competency-based, project-based, and asynchronous learning options.
- Collaborate with district and school leaders to expand student access to digital and alternative learning opportunities.
- Lead the adoption and integration of effective instructional technology and digital tools to enhance learning outcomes.
Instructional Leadership
- Support the development and implementation of rigorous, standards-aligned curricula for virtual and alternative programs.
- Provide leadership in differentiating instruction and ensuring equitable access for all learners, including students with disabilities and English learners.
- Facilitate professional development for staff on online pedagogy, trauma-informed practices, restorative approaches, and student engagement strategies.
Student Support and Engagement
- Partner with school counselors, social workers, and student services staff to provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional supports.
- Implement systems to monitor student progress, attendance, and engagement, with proactive interventions to improve outcomes.
- Promote pathways to graduation, college readiness, career preparation, and lifelong learning.
Data, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Collect and analyze data on student performance, enrollment, retention, and program effectiveness.
- Prepare and present reports to district leadership, the school board, and community stakeholders.
- Use data to drive continuous improvement and decision-making across virtual and alternative learning programs.
Collaboration and Communication
- Serve as the primary liaison for district virtual and alternative learning programs with state agencies, community organizations, and postsecondary partners.
- Communicate program goals, outcomes, and opportunities to families, students, and staff through various channels.
- Build partnerships with community-based organizations, workforce development agencies, and higher education institutions to expand learning pathways.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, and/or a related field (Doctorate preferred).
- Valid administrative credential (Principal Certification is required)
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in K–12 education.
- Administrative experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated success leading virtual, alternative, or innovative learning programs
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- In-depth understanding of K–12 instructional practices in virtual and alternative settings.
- Knowledge of learning management systems (LMS), digital curriculum platforms, and student information systems (SIS).
- Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
- Ability to design programs that meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of diverse learners.
- Data-driven decision-making and strong organizational skills.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered innovation.
Working Conditions
- Office, school site, and virtual work environments.
- Occasional evening or weekend hours to meet program needs.
- Travel between district sites and community partners as required.
