Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)
DEFINITION: This is a related service position within the Department of Special Education. The COTA is responsible for the remediation of compensation for deficits in the areas of sensory motor, fine motor, visual perception, and self care which interfere with the students participation and achievement in the educational environment. These services are provided by the COTA under the direction and supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist. The COTA works cooperatively with teachers, parents/guardians, and students in the capacity of consultant or direct service provider. The COTA is directly responsible to the senior coordinator of special education programs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Associates degree in occupational therapy from an accredited education program, and completion of all fieldwork education requirements.
- Registration with the American Occupational Therapy
- Association following successful completion of the national certification examination.
- Occupational Therapy Assistant certification with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health Professions.
- A means of transportation to a variety of schools during the work day.
